In the 1990’s, Rush Limbaugh was the strong, conservative voice fighting the claim that President Bill Clinton and Monica Lowinasky’s affair was just about sex. He took punch after punch for standing on the principle that Clinton’s lying under oath was the issue, not the sex. He argued that it was about character. Unfortunately, thanks to Donald Trump, the Republican surrogates and Rush Limbaugh are now officially having to argue it’s not about character, it’s just about words.
On his Monday program, Rush Limbaugh commented on Access Hollywood’s lewd video of Trump released the previous Friday. He bloviated about how Trump’s comments were just “locker room banter”. Limbaugh made several statements insisting he did not agree with Trump’s remarks, but reminded the audience that the Democrats go after Republicans like this every time. Last election Democrats demonized Mitt Romney for minor transgressions, even though, Rush pointed out, he is one of the most upstanding men he knows. The problem with Trump is now Democrats actually have a bright orange target that epitomizes every lie they have ever told about Republicans.
It’s not that Trump said some demeaning words about women. It’s what he claimed he did to women. Grabbing their genitals without consent and getting away with it because he is famous is not just “locker room banter.” The “war on women” that the Democrats accused Romney of has just been handed to them on a silver platter in all its VHS glory. Everything Bill Clinton did, Trump claimed to do. If the argument is that it is just about words, then Trump’s all talk; A Bill Clinton wanna be. Who would be shocked if Hillary doesn’t parade out several women at the next debate who claim Trump assaulted them? This isn’t an election. It’s a reality show circus – The dreams that media ratings are made of.
The Republicans have always distinguished themselves from their opponents by taking the ethical and moral high road. Now, because of the Trump tapes, conservative pundits are forced to abandon every last moral argument they have. So, we can officially say there is absolutely no difference between Democrats and Republicans. And this is only the beginning. Those that were #NeverTrump in the primaries knew that with 30 years of a very public life, often described vividly on Howard Stern’s show in obscene detail, the Democrats would have ample ammunition to throw at Donald in an October surprise. The next four weeks the American public will be inundated with salacious videos and stories just like what was heard on Access Hollywood. Some may be far worse.
Because of Trump’s past, he CAN’T argue the issues because the Democrats have too much real character ammo to shoot at him. Yes, if you go up against the establishment, you will get attacked. But when you’re going up against the establishment, you have to have enough moral character that there is nothing to hide and nothing to defend. Donald Trump was never that candidate.
The Democrat’s “it’s just sex” defense is now the Republican’s “it’s just words” defense. The same conservative analysts who have been telling listeners everyday for decades that character matters are willingly excusing character flaws in their own candidate. Unfortunately, this is taking many Christians along with it, willing to excuse a flawed candidate not because he’s repentant, but because they have to win. They want a leader of a rebellion. They want Barabbas. Donald’s strongest supporters believe too much in their candidate because he was the one man willing to take a firm stance on both sides of an issue that he knows absolutely nothing about. Trump’s adoring fans viciously attack anyone who is willing to stand rather than bow down to the golden statue of King Trump.
But they are merely following the lead of their champion. Trump himself is attacking any Republican or conservative who is abandoning him, trying to prove that he can shoot someone on Fifth Avenue, and if the party doesn’t stand behind him, he’ll massacre them too. And the adoring crowds cheer, “Give us Barabbas. Give us Barabbas.”
Donald Trump eviscerated Hillary in the second debate. He effectively revealed what a flawed candidate she is and how poorly she has performed over three decades in the public eye. Unfortunately, Trump’s own past shows the same is true of him. Hillary could die live on TV in the final debate and still win the election, largely because she will have clinched 100% of the deceased vote.
When the dust settles and the election is over, there are going to be many commentators who will be spending weeks in the shower trying to wash the filth of this cycle off of them. The damage is done. The vast majority of commentators on both sides have lost all credibility. We are left with two highly flawed candidates and the American people will suffer.
Trump supporters wanted a person who was going to destroy the Republican establishment. Congratulations, that is exactly what is happening, but not with a Donald Trump victory. The tattered fragments of the Republican establishment will happily serve under a Hillary Clinton Presidency, a Democrat controlled Congress, and an activist Supreme Court. The Republican establishment of Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell are being handed what they wanted all along – to play the hapless Washington Generals to the Globalist Trotters who want to welcome in illegals, allow the Muslim Brotherhood to guide Homeland Security, and give American sovereignty over to the UN. And there’s no building a wall high enough to protect us from that.
But that’s just my 2 cents.
