Over the past several months, people have pleaded, demanded, demeaned and threatened Christians regarding their presidential vote. Some have gone as far as accusing those who don’t fall at the feet of Trump of not being Christian or actually hating Jesus. An interesting approach for people who believe God will use Trump regardless of who he is or what he has done.
The argument that “God can use anyone for his good” is 100% true. An all-powerful God can actually use Hillary Clinton if he so chooses. God has a purpose for everyone, even #NeverTrumpers. It is those who remain faithful, even in the face of persecution, that God uses to change the hearts of those gone astray.
While discussing the election at the dinner table, I asked my husband, “What would Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego do?” Without missing a beat, my 4-year-old confidently replied, “Worship God.”
When King Nebuchadnezzar demanded everyone worship his golden statue, thousands of exiled Israelites complied. When three Judean men of stature refused, several jealous Babylonians sought revenge. They informed the king, who became enraged. Nebuchadnezzar demanded they worship his image, promising to destroy them if they didn’t. Again, the men declined.
Furious, Nebuchadnezzar ordered the heat of the furnace fire increased by seven times. The servants tossing Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in died just from the heat.
To the king’s amazement, he witnessed the men walking in the fire along with a forth whom he described as, “like the Son of God”. Nebuchadnezzar then called for the “servants of the Most High God” to come out.
The men’s defiance, not compliance, revealed God to Nebuchadnezzar. Their witness of steadfast devotion to God compelled the king to declare, “Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who has sent his angel and delivered his servants, who trusted in him, and set aside the king’s command, and yielded up their bodies rather than serve and worship any god except their own God. Therefore I make a decree: Any people, nation, or language that speaks anything against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego shall be torn limb from limb, and their houses laid in ruins, for there is no other god who is able to rescue in this way.” Daniel 3
God can change anyone’s heart. But He calls Christians to be the witnesses to His mercy that allows Him to reveal to His glory to all.
God used Daniel’s faithfulness to bring about a similar witness. Jealousy caused officials to purposely set Daniel up. Devising a plan “in connection with the law of his God,” they enticed King Darius to decree absolutely no worship for a month. When Daniel did not defy God’s law to comply, the officials informed the king. Darius respected Daniel. He was devastated as there was nothing he could do to save Daniel.
When Daniel emerged from the lion’s den unharmed, Darius threw the conspirators in along with their families. He then made a new decree, “That in every dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel: for he is the living God, and steadfast for ever, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed, and his dominion shall be even unto the end.” Daniel 6
Nebuchadnezzar arrogantly made a decree demanding worship of his own idol. Darius was coerced into a decree forbidding any worship at all. In both cases, jealous men colluded to destroy those adhering to God’s commands. The four men were steadfast in their faithfulness. What resulted was two pagan kings praising and professing God, and mandating protection for His followers. If the men would have given in to demands and complied to the decrees, God would not have been able to show His glory through the saving of their lives.
Other Israelites succumbed to the edicts. They gave in to the pressure and went along for the common good. There are no stories about them. No one knows who they were. They did not witness to anyone. We know Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego and Daniel. Four men who would not waver, who would not give in to threats. It is through these men that God’s glory was revealed and the hearts of the kings were affected.
Many have convinced themselves that #NeverTrumpers really want a Hillary Clinton presidency. They purposely dismiss the adherence to principles because “we just have to win this one.” They refuse to accept that some people put their principles over party regardless of who the opponent is.
Winston Churchhill once said, “Some men change their party for the sake of their principles; others their principles for the sake of their party.”
So many this election have decided that principles must be abandoned because Hillary is so bad. It’s true, she is a complete disaster. But the fact is, most #NeverTrumpers believe Trump is just as dangerous in different ways.
The #NeverTrumpers who have stood strong are no different than Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego and Daniel. Trump and his supporters are no different than the kings, their men, and the other Israelites. If you honestly believe that God can use Trump, or Hillary for that matter, then you must accept those willing to face the fire as active participants in God’s plan as well.
Everyone has to make their own choice. If you have come to the conclusion that you have to vote for Trump, that is a decision you have to make. If your conscience tells you to vote for Trump, then do it. However, be wise not to crucify those who choose to stand in the fire rather than support either one of the top candidates. Realize it is the ones who stand firm with God that bring about the change of heart so many believe Trump can have.
God does not save His people because they choose the lesser of two evils. He saves His people because of those who remain faithful and stand only with Him.
Remember, God does use all of us and we all have a part to play.
So, what would Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego do? I think my little daughter was 100% correct.
But that’s just my 2 cents.
