In an interview on the “Today” show, billionaire and GOP presidential contender Donald Trump said in reference to recent legislation addressing transgender bathrooms that people should use whichever restroom they feel is appropriate. But he added that designating separate restrooms specifically for transgender people would not only be discriminatory, but also extremely costly to businesses.
Regarding North Carolina’s transgender bathroom law – which has drawn the superficial ire of big businesses and celebrities – Donald Trump said that the state is paying a big price for what they’ve done, stating that they and other states should have just left everything the way it was:
“One of the best answers I heard was from a commentator yesterday, saying ‘Leave it the way it is right now.’ There have been very few problems. Leave it the way it is. North Carolina, what they’re going through with all of the business that’s leaving and all of the strife, and that’s on both sides — you leave it the way it is.
“There have been very few complaints the way it is. People go, they use the bathroom that they feel is appropriate. There has been so little trouble. And the problem with what happened in North Carolina is the strife, and the — the economic punishment that they’re taking.”
