❖ A recent series on Netflix called “13 Reasons Why” deals with suicide among high schoolers and contains a “graphic suicide scene of a high school-aged character.” Tim Winter, president of the Parents Television Council, says, “The impact was powerful and intense: millions of children watched; the Google search term for how to commit suicide spiked 26 percent; and there were news reports of children literally taking their own lives after the series was released.” The Parents Television Council President offers some recommendations in reference to this. Tim Winter joins Jerry Newcombe to talk about how Netflix “should allow filtering, price breaks, for parents” in light of this series. www.parentstv.org
❖ Are persecuted Christians from some of the troubled nations being accepted and resettled into America at a lower rate presently? Apparently so. Jenny Yang, the vice president of Advocacy and Policy at World Relief (in Maryland), gave a presentation to the International Religious Freedom Caucus recently, outlining this development. She said there has been an 80% drop in Christian refugees being resettled in America, compared to even two years ago. Yang states, “[There’s a] fundamental principle of promoting religious freedom and democracy in our acceptance of refugees. In fact, they’re fundamentally tied together.” Jenny Yang joins Jerry Newcombe on Vocal Point to discuss this disturbing trend. www.worldrelief.org
❖ There are many reports lately from a variety of quarters about social media giants, like Facebook, Google, YouTube, and Twitter, censoring Christian and conservative content. Steven Andrew is a software engineer in the greater Silicon Valley area, who has worked for some major corporations. He is working to start a Christian and conservative alternative to Facebook, et al. He writes: “USA.Life is America’s new social network. USA.Life is the answer to Facebook and Twitter censoring Christians, Conservatives and Liberty. This is where you share life, liberty and happiness, and connect with people important to you.” He is also the founder of 1776Free.com (a search engine site). Silicon Valley tech Steven Andrew joins Jerry Newcombe on Vocal Point to discuss his ambitious plans. www.usa.life
❖ For decades, Brent Bozell and his team at the Media Research Center, have been tracking media bias in the mainstream outlets. Now, with the giant big tech companies, like Twitter, Facebook, Google, YouTube, there is also anti-conservative media bias. MRC has released a nearly 60-page blockbuster report recently, called “Censorsed! How Online Media Companies Are Suppressing Conservative Speech.” In that report, they observe: “Like it or not, social media is the communication form of the future — not just in the U.S., but worldwide…..War is being declared on the conservative movement in this space and conservatives are losing — badly….It’s the new battleground of media bias. But it’s worse. That bias is not a war of ideas. It’s a war against ideas. It’s a clear effort to censor the conservative worldview from the public conversation.” Dan Gainor, MRC’s Vice President of Business and Culture, joins Jerry Newcombe on Vocal Point to discuss this censorship. www.mrc.org
