Thanks to Obama, Russia Could Blow US Out of Arctic Region

The best defense is a strong offense. That’s been a fact for centuries, proven time and again.

So, one has to wonder why Barack Obama worked so hard to dismantle America’s military defenses. He pushed to allow gays to openly serve which caused some military personnel who held on to their Christian values to resign. Then Obama pushed his gay rights initiative onto military chaplains, forcing them to perform same-sex unions and marriages, even though it was against their religion. Failure to do so could result in strong disciplinary action up to being court martialed. Obama then pushed to extend benefits to the unwed gay partners of military personnel but not to the unwed opposite sex partners of military personnel.

Obama then attacked the retirement program for the military making it less desirable for people to give the country twenty or more years of their lives  Instead of being able to retire after twenty years and draw one’s pension at the age of 38 and older, Obama pushed to make a change so they cannot draw their military retirement until 67 years of age. A number of people coming out of the military after 20 years have a hard time finding appropriate work and rely on that well-deserved pension to help them survive, but that doesn’t matter to Obama.

Troop and weaponry reduction was next on Obama’s list. Through his edict, former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta began reducing the number of active military personnel in all branches. Ships, planes and other equipment have also been reduced in numbers.

Obama has also began weeding out those top military leaders that refused to say that they would shoot fellow Americans if ordered to do so. They were turned down for promotions or moved to other non-essential positions, both of which are career killers in the military.

With North Korea posturing for a nuclear strike, one has to be concerned over the fact that Obama reduced the number of nuclear weapons and kept pushing for further reductions. In 2010, the US nuclear arsenal numbered nearly 2,500. Since that time, Obama reduced it to 1,700 and pushed for a further reduction to take the numbers to 1,000. That’s a 60% reduction in just the few couple years.

Supposedly due to military budget cuts and the sequester, the Navy delayed indefinitely the refueling and reconditioning of two air craft carriers.  The last I heard, there were a number of aircraft carriers docked in the US, instead of being deployed.

While Obama was busy dismantling out military and our defenses, what was our adversaries doing?

Vladimir Putin took the opposite road and spent the past eight years building up Russia’s military strength. A significant part of the Russian buildup has been taking place along its northern Arctic coast, especially since some of the Arctic Sea ice has been melting back, exposing more coastline to ocean access. A recent report stated:

“The numbers don’t lie. In recent years, Russia unveiled a new Arctic command, four new Arctic brigade combat teams, 14 new operational airfields, 16 deepwater ports, and 40 icebreakers with an additional 11 in development. (The United States has one working icebreaker for the Arctic — it’s only other one is broken.)”

Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-AK) recently commented about the Russian buildup:

“They clearly recognized what the stakes in the Arctic are. They weren’t just talking, they were taking action.”

“The highways of the Arctic are icebreakers. Russia has superhighways, and we have dirt roads with potholes.”

There are some US-NATO bases in Norway and Canada, but nothing close in comparison to what the Russians have.

In addition to the issue of national security, there is also the energy issues of the Arctic to consider. US oil companies have a lot of interest in oil reserves in the Arctic region, but without proper military might to protect those interests, they are in danger from foreign powers like Russia.

If push comes to shove right now, it sure looks like Russia could blow the US right out of the water and the Arctic.
