Texas Sheriff Vows to Protect Illegal Aliens

Barack Obama established a precedent for officials to decide for themselves what laws they will and will not enforce or obey. When Obama defied his oath of office and chose to violate the US Constitution, Congress and federal immigration laws, a growing number of liberals determined that they could also choose to defy them also.

One of the ways that liberals are intentionally violating federal immigration laws is to establish sanctuary cities and areas where illegal aliens could remain safe and free from federal deportation. Perhaps one of the most infamous sanctuary cities is San Francisco, where an illegal who should have been in custody or deported shot and killed Kathryn Steinle.

Now, Sally Hernandez, Sheriff of Travis County, Texas has vowed to make the county a sort of sanctuary place for illegals. According to a Fox News report:

“Travis County Sheriff Sally Hernandez announced last week she’s scaling back the amount of aid her department provides federal immigration agents in detaining suspects who might be in the country illegally, according to the Austin American-Statesman.”

“Starting Feb. 1, sheriff’s officials will begin honoring so-called immigration holds or ‘detainers’ placed by federal authorities only when a suspect is booked into the Travis County Jail on charges of capital murder, aggravated sexual assault and ‘continuous smuggling of persons.’”

“Otherwise, federal agents must have a court order or arrest warrant signed by a judge for the jail to continue housing a person whose immigration status is in question.”

Travis County is the home to over one million people and the state capital of Austin.

In her campaign for the sheriff’s office, one of Hernandez’s campaign websites stated:

“We need to ensure that all Travis County families are safe in our community, and confident that police will treat them equally under the law. In order to advance equal treatment for everyone in Travis County and to improve public safety in immigrant communities, I believe that the current relationship between the Travis County Sheriff’s Office and U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) must end. Travis County should not honor illegal, warrantless ICE notifications or detainer requests, period…”

My Plan to Rebuild Relationships Within Immigrant Communities:

  • I will end the voluntary cooperation with ICE and the Priority Enforcement Program (PEP-Comm), the successor program to Secure Communities (S-Comm).”

Taking the anti-federal immigration law stand she is taking, it should be no surprise to learn that Sheriff Hernandez is not just a Democrat but a very radical socialist Democrat as indicated by the list of her activities on the vote4sally.com website. Among those activities are memberships in the following organizations: Austin Environmental Democrats, Black Austin Democrats, Capital Area Democratic Women, Capital Area Progressive Democrats, Central Austin Democrats, South Austin Democrats, Tejano Democrats and Travis County Asian American Democrats. Note that ‘progressive Democrats’ is a politically correct way of saying ‘socialist Democrats.’

In the wake of Hernandez’s stance on protecting illegal aliens, Texas Governor Greg Abbott is vowing to take action against her and the county. According to the Fox News report:

“Hernandez’s announcement came as Texas Republicans are gearing up for a new fight to ban so-called sanctuary cities in the current legislative session.”

“Abbott responded to the announcement, tweeting his office ‘will cut funding for Travis County adopting sanctuary policies.’”

“‘Stiffer penalties coming,’ Abbott’s tweet said.”

“Abbott has pushed the issue to the front of his unofficial agenda for 2017, pledging in interviews and on social media to sign into law a ‘ban’ on cities and local governments that are seen as protecting people in the U.S. illegally, with sanctions such as cutting state funding. Civil rights groups say the threat from the governor could lead to racial profiling.”

“Travis County could lose up to $1.8 million in grants because the governor’s office requires compliance in order to receive grants.”

I have mixed feelings on this. When Obama threatened to use executive actions to impose stricter gun control laws, a number of county sheriffs publicly announced that they would not enforce them. Based upon a US Supreme Court decision that declared that a county sheriff is the supreme law in their counties, county sheriffs have the legal authority over federal officials. At the time, I fully supported the actions of the many county sheriffs who were in defiance of Obama, so how can I now condemn Hernandez for her decisions on illegal immigration? I feel that Hernandez is wrong and I hope and pray that Abbott can persuade her to change her stance.
