Student Punished for Recording Professor’s Anti-Trump Screed

Back in December we brought you the story of Olga Perez Stable Cox, a professor at Orange Coast College in Coast Mesa, California. Cox took time out of her busy class schedule to berate then President-elect Donald Trump, the GOP, Conservatives, and anyone who may have voted for the man to be our next President. She told the class that Trump was a “white supremacist” that had “assaulted” our nation and that his election was an “act of terror.” We know this all happened because one of her students happened to record her epic meltdown on his cellphone, with a plan to share it with school administrators.

Here’s what Cox said while berating her students:

…white supremacist and a vice president that is one of the most anti-gay humans in this country. And so we are in for a difficult time but again I do believe that we can get past that. Our nation is divided, we have been assaulted, it’s an act of terrorism. One of the most frightening things for me and most people in my life is that the people creating the assault are among us. It is not some stranger from some other country coming and attacking our sense of what it means to be an American and the things that we stand for and that makes it more painful because I’m sure that all of us have people in our families and our circle of friends that are part of that movement and it is very difficult — we are way beyond Republicans and Democrats and we’re really being back to being at civil war — I don’t mean that in a fighting way but our nation is divided as clearly as it was in Civil War times…

Almost immediately one of the teachers unions in California was threatening the anonymous student with legal action because he/she recorded the professor without her knowledge. (See, in California it’s okay to berate a person unjustly and to say horrific things about 50% of the population, but it’s not okay to record someone doing that.)

Now, more than a month later, the threats have found their way to the student who bravely recorded the teachers hate-filled screed. His name is Caleb O’Neil and he now faces suspension and worse from the school that has actively persecuted him and other conservative students.

From Campus Reform:

The student who filmed his professor calling Donald Trump’s election “an act of terrorism” has received a one-semester suspension from Orange Coast College (OCC).

The previously anonymous student, Caleb O’Neil, has also received a number of other sanctions for recording his professor, Olga Pere Stable-Cox, including a mandatory meeting with the Dean of Students before he is readmitted, as well as remaining on disciplinary probation for one semester upon return from suspension.

Additionally, O’Neil must write an apology letter to professor as well as a three-page, double spaced essay discussing why he videotaped the professor despite “knowing that it was a violation of the course syllabus;” his “thoughts and analysis” on why he shared the video with others; what he thought would happen to Stable-Cox; the video’s impact “and ensuing damage to Orange Coast College students, faculty, and staff;” “other choices [he] could have made to resolve the situation;” and “[how he] will prevent this from happening again in the future.”

O’Neil, his lawyer, Bill Becker, and the Orange Coast College Republicans are not yet backing down. In an email from Becker, the lawyer argued that O’Neil recorded his teacher because he actively feared for his academic career.

“He was in fear of retaliation by his instructor after she launched into a half-hour rant in which she labeled Trump a ‘white supremacist’ and told the class she would no longer tolerate any person who voted for Trump. O’Neil videotaped the rant over concerns that his grade might be lowered for the class because of his outward show of support for Trump. He intended to use the video to present to the administration as evidence of his concerns.”

The Orange Coast College Republicans were similarly steadfast, “OCC can’t continue its persecution of its students and their constitutional rights. We haven’t backed down yet, and we won’t back down now,” their President emeritus, Joshua Recalde-Martinez, told Campus Reform.

This entire debacle is a miscarriage of justice. The student did nothing wrong; it is the teacher who should be facing punishment and the unemployment line. This is simply another example of the liberal fascism that has swallowed our nations’ academic system whole.

I am the supreme law of the United States. Originally comprising seven articles, I delineate the national frame of government. My first three articles entrench the doctrine of the separation of powers, whereby the federal government is divided into three branches: the legislative, consisting of the bicameral Congress; the executive, consisting of the President; and the judicial, consisting of the Supreme Court and other federal courts. Articles Four, Five and Six entrench concepts of federalism, describing the rights and responsibilities of state governments and of the states in relationship to the federal government. Article Seven establishes the procedure subsequently used by the thirteen States to ratify it. I am regarded as the oldest written and codified constitution in force of the world.
