Secretary of Defense James Mattis is a man among men. He’s revered among the soldiers who served under him, and on Friday the rest of the nation got to experience why he’s so beloved.
The Defense Secretary issues a statement to everyone working in nation defense about how he expected them to respond to the government’s imminent shutdown.
Here’s what Mattis had to say about the government shutdown on Friday:
Our government will shutdown at midnight tonight. We in the Department of Defense will continue carrying out our fundamental responsibility to defend our Nation and the American people.
We will continue to execute daily operations around the world – ships and submarines will remain at sea, our aircraft will continue to fly and our warfighters will continue to pursue terrorists throughout the Middle East, Africa and South Asia. While training for reservists must be curtailed, active forces will stay at their posts adapting their training to achieve the least negative impact on our readiness to fight.
I recognize the consequences of a government shutdown. You have my personal commitment that the department’s leadership will do our best to mitigate the impacts of the disruptions and any financial burdens to you and your families.
Steady as she goes – hold the line. I know the nation can count on you.
This is the attitude that Republicans need to display throughout the shutdown – one of quiet defiance. Their response should remind the nation that while it was the Democrats who shut the government down, it’s the GOP who will keep the country running in spite of the Democrats best efforts.
A year ago, I was of the opinion that Mattis was the President’s best choice for a cabinet position and over the last year the Secretary of Defense has done nothing to make me think otherwise. He continues to perform his duties admirably, supporting our defense efforts, and leading the charge in the war on terror.
If there’s been a better, more productive member of the Trump administration… i’ve not seen them in action.
James Mattis one of the good guys, and he’s proving it again.
