Why is Bernie Still Holding On to Hope?

No one likes to concede. Anyone who really wants to win, and that would be all of us, wants to hold on to hope for victory. We as Americans like the “Cinderella” story. And we all have envisioned living out such a story.

This has to be the driving force behind the hope to be found in the Sander’s camp. With Sanders setting just above 700 delegates behind Clinton there seems no conventional way that he could win the nomination. But this has not caused the presidential candidate to give up or concede.

The Washington Times reports

With little likelihood of overtaking Hillary Clinton in the delegate count, Sen. Bernard Sanders’ campaign on Tuesday openly talked about an “open convention” this summer in Philadelphia, arguing neither candidate will have enough delegates to secure the nomination.

Appearing on CNN Tuesday, Sanders campaign manager Jeff Weaver said he expects so-called superdelegates — party leaders and elected officials free to support whomever they choose — to flip and throw their support behind the Vermont senator.

To have such an outcome, we would have to see something that has never happened. The superdelegates would have to ignore the popular vote of their party and flip from supporting Clinton to supporting Sanders.

The only thing that seems could cause such a flip-flop would be the possibility of a Clinton arrest. Barring that, there appears to be little chance of this being more than wishful thinking. And as the Clinton Camp has pointed out, Sanders himself may be to blame for his winning being such a long shot.

The Times continues

“For most of the campaign, Senator Sanders has criticized the role that superdelegates play in the nominating process, but as he now campaigns without a clear path to the nomination that relies on the voters, he’s aggressively courting their support,” Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook wrote in a memo.

It seems more and more likely that both parties are going to ignore their members and self-destruct. Now that is holding out hope.
