Tensions are certainly high between the United States and Russia, with many fearing that a new Cold War is upon us…or worse, World War III.
While there have been incidents of Russian jets recklessly buzzing U.S. Navy ships abroad for years, and there has always been a palpable air of distrust between the world’s two most indomitable superpowers, the past few months have taken things up at least a notch.
Donald Trump’s airstrike on the Sharyat airfield in Syria, purported to be the origin of a vicous chemical weapons attack by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, has sent Russian diplomats into a tizzy. Not only has the Kremlin issued a dire warning to America in the form of a threat of war, now it seems that Vladimir Putin himself will be childishly turning up his nose at the United States after the involvement in Syria.
“Russian President Vladimir Putin won’t meet with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson when he’s in Moscow on Wednesday – an apparent snub after the Trump administration dropped bombs on Syria last week.
“Putin is passing Tillerson off to his foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov.
“The Kremlin did not say why the Russian president was avoiding Tillerson after meeting repeatedly with his predecessor, John Kerry, in the Obama years. But it ripped the US for its air assault in Syria and warned Donald Trump that he was ‘one step from war’ with the country after the attack.
“Trump’s spokesman declined to issue threats to Russia from the podium Monday while declaring that the US will not hesitate to act if Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad gases his own people again.”
President Trump, even in the infancy of his first term, has shown a determination to uphold law and order that was discernibly vacant from the precious democratic administration. The choice to move against Syria was not to be free of consequences, but Trump’s conscious could not let it stand. Now, it will be up to the Russians to decide the tone of White House, and whether or not they choose to stand behind the brutality of Bashar al-Assad, or risk facing off with the almighty American military.
