In 2008, my granddaughter’s elementary class held a mock presidential election. She was only in first grade at a public school, but before the class voted, the teacher instructed them all to vote for Barack Obama. As young as she was, my granddaughter told me it was wrong of her teacher to tell all the kids how to vote. I asked her who she voted for and she told me she voted for John McCain but the teacher found out and yelled at her.
In 2012, my granddaughter was in fifth grade and again her public school held a mock election. Different teacher, but basically the same thing happened when her teacher told the class they should vote for Obama. Once again my granddaughter voted against Obama and got yelled at for not following instructions. When she tried to explain that she had the right to vote however she wanted, she was stopped and got into further trouble.
I heard numerous cases of public school teachers suppressing the political right to free speech and free voting from around the nation. One high school girl went to school wearing a Romney-Ryan t-shirt in 2012 and was told by her teacher to take off the t-shirt in front of the rest of the class and she would be given another shirt to wear. Of course, the girl, Samantha Pawlucy refused and the honor student got into trouble. The entire time this was happening, the teacher was berating her in front of the rest of the class. Samantha was so embarrassed and humiliated that she is now afraid to return to the school as she has had threats from other students about her shirt.
This year seems to be no different as another liberal public school principal has cancelled the mock election at an elementary school in Centereach, New York. Glen Rogers, Principal at Jericho Elementary School decided to cancel the school’s mock presidential election and replace it with having the students vote on their favorite school lunch.
Roger’s decision was made after it was reported that students in cafeteria were chanting ‘Trump! Trump! Trump! Rogers also stated that some students were getting into heated discussions about the politics they had heard on the television and that some were saying that they didn’t want Muslim’s in their school. Rogers said that they live in a diverse area and that he didn’t want to allow the disparaging comments made about Muslims or other minorities.
What Rogers fails to understand that is that the students have the constitutional right to express their concerns about allowing Muslims into their school and community. If they have been watching the television and the news, they would know that Muslims have already been taking over and destroying entire towns in Europe and they don’t want to see that here in their own town.
When news of the election cancellation reached social media, one person posted:
“Oh look – PC culture strikes again and we have to shield snowflakes from real-world issues they’ll face anyway, member 1776?”
Rogers said they will continue with the school lunch election on Election Day, saying:
“We still thought it was important to do something with voting and showing democracy in action.”
Democracy in action? What kind of democracy is it when Roger’s violates the constitutional rights of his students? What lesson is he teaching his kids? What he’s teaching them is that they have no freedom speech nor are they allowed to express genuine concerns for anything. It also teaches them that they are not allowed to vote or favor anyone who goes against the school’s liberal or socialistic ideology.
