Democrat President Jimmy Carter was not only a terrible President who lost his office after only one term, but he has also been a terrible ex-president who has run all over the world propping up dictators.
Carter has always been a reliable left-winger, but this weekend he shocked his cohorts by needling Hillary Clinton, slamming Barack Obama, dismissing the left’s pet Trump/Russia theory, and telling the NFL that their protests are wrongheaded.
In a new interview with Maureen Dowd of The New York Times, Carter made so many comments that, as far as the left is concerned, came out of left field… and that old baseball phrase for “unexpected” couldn’t be more amusing in this case. In fact, it is hard to believe that this is the same Castro-loving, liberal whose “malaise” became such a national disgrace that it helped him lose re-election.
Perhaps one of his worst apostasies for liberals was his scolding of the press for attacking President Donald J. Trump. It is clear that ol’ Jimmy isn’t on the email list of those liberals working to destroy Donald “White Supremacist” Trump.
Indeed, some of what President Carter said could well be read as supportive of the current occupant of the Oval Office.
He told Dowd that he has contacted Trump’s administration and offered to help intervene between the U.S. and North Korean madman Kim Jong-un. He even said he had spoken to Trump’s security adviser, H.R. McMaster, but they turned his offer down. Still, despite that, Carter said he is willing to help in any way he can.
This offer alone is enough to cause heartburn for today’s liberals. They don’t want anything to do with Trump and anyone who would offer to help him is dead to them.
Oh but Carter had much more to say. The Georgian then scolded the media for being too hard on Trump.
“I think the media have been harder on Trump than any other president certainly that I’ve known about,” Carter told Dowd. “I think they feel free to claim that Trump is mentally deranged and everything else without hesitation.”
You can hear liberal heads exploding all across the country with that one.
Then, while he did spout the liberal line that Trump is making the racial division worse, he didn’t characterize it the way the leftwing wants it characterized.
“Yes, I think he is exacerbating it,” Carter said. “But maybe not deliberately.”
This is not following the liberal playbook. Just as the left wanted America to believe that George W. Bush was evil — remember, they called him George McChimpy Bush-Hitler — the liberal mantra today is that Donald Trump is a racist and an outright white supremacist. Full stop.
That is despite the fact that from the day Trump made himself a public figure back in the 1980s there are few claims that he was ever a racist. Trump just doesn’t have much history of being called a racist until he became president. As soon as he won the White House, the left instantly made him the king of racists.
He still wasn’t done giving the left a grabber. He next went on to discount the whole Trump/Russia narrative. Carter said that if Trump did really have conversations with the Russians, it just didn’t bother him at all.
“At the Carter Center,” Carter insisted, “we deal with Putin and the Russians quite frequently concerning Syria.”
As they say on those late night TV informercials, but wait, there’s more.
Carter next scoffed at the hundreds of NFL players who are protesting against the country during the playing of the national anthem. Again going against the liberal narrative, Carter said that the NFL anthem protests are a bad idea.
“I think they ought to find a different way to object, to demonstrate. I would rather see all the players stand during the American anthem,” Carter exclaimed.
Hoo, boy. That totally destroys the left’s proclamation that the players have a “right” to protest (even though they don’t) and that we should all shut up and let these pampered millionaires complain that they are “oppressed.”
Carter wasn’t anywhere near done. Next he essentially slammed Hillary as a bad presidential candidate by noting that he and wife Roselyn voted for Bernie Sanders, not Hillary, during the Georgia primaries.
Finally, Carter criticized the left’s god on earth, Barack Obama.
Carter trenchantly noted that Barack Obama fell far short of his “hope and change” promises. Obama promised to become the post racial president who would heal the country. Yet, he made things worse, not better.
“He made some very wonderful statements, in my opinion, when he first got in office, and then he reneged on that,” Carter said.
It seems pretty clear that Jimmy Carter didn’t get the left’s memo. And you can be sure that liberals all across the country are pretty unhappy with his comments.
