In the last week, pundits and politicians have been wondering about whether or not Donald Trump would ever get around to pardoning Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
Certainly, there have been other more pressing issues for the President to attend to. Increasing racial tension in the nation, attacks from the radical left on the American population, and attacks on the President being perpetrated by the mainstream media.
In a raucous mid-week campaign-style rally, Trump spent nearly an hour and a half speaking on any subject that he cared to. He was a free man, off script at times, and, being in Arizona, he would have been amiss in not speaking about native son Arpaio.
Trump’s answer was sly, but telling, letting the world know that Joe Arpaio had “nothing to worry about”.
Today, President Trump made good on that promise.
“Arpaio, 85, was recently found guilty of criminal contempt for defying a judge’s order to stop traffic patrols that allegedly targeted immigrants.
“He had been charged with misdemeanor contempt of court for allegedly willfully defying a judge’s order in 2011 and prolonging his patrols for another 17 months.
“Arpaio acknowledged extending the patrols, but insisted it wasn’t intentional, blaming one of his former attorneys for not properly explaining the importance of the court order and brushing off the conviction as a ‘petty crime.’
“He was expected to be sentenced on Oct. 5 and faced up to six months in jail if convicted.
“‘Sheriff Joe Arpaio is now 85 years old, and after more than 50 years of admirable service to our Nation, he is worthy candidate for a Presidential pardon,’ the White House said in a statement.”
Sheriff Joe had made quite the reputation for himself in recent years, as a tough-talking and gruff border state lawman who was hellbent on exposing the truth of illegal immigration and cartel activity on America’s southern wall.
The pardon will surely please Trump’s base, who have been clamoring for Arpaio’s amnesty for months. This could spell a bit of an approval bump for the President as well, as sustained accusations from the leftist media have taken their toll in recent weeks.
