No Matter Who Wins – God is in Control

“God is in charge. God is in control. God is sovereign. Nothing takes place without God’s will or command. There is always a purpose, even if we can’t see it or understand it.” — Derek W.H. Thomas of First Presbyterian Church in Columbia, South Carolina

Reverend Derek Thomas recently preached a sermon that is making the rounds across the Internet and inspiring many different interpretations of meaning. The sermon is titled “I am the Only God there Is” and it comes from Isaiah 45:22 which reads “Look unto me and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God and there is no one else.”

Using Isaiah 44 and 45 as his launching off point, Thomas tells the story of Cyrus the Great who ruled Persia, conquered Babylon, and freed the Jews from the Babylonian captivity. Thomas then explains that while Cyrus was a wicked man and a brutal dictator, he was greatly used of God to accomplish God’s purposes. The Reverend then connects the life of Cyrus to the predicament of many American Christians today…

“I don’t think you would have liked Cyrus,” Thomas argued. “History has looked favorably upon him because of what he did for the Jews in the record of biblical history, but he was a brute…

How can God use a pagan king like Cyrus the Great to advance his glory? It’s a very serious question. Let me suggest that God as sovereign may employ whomever he wishes to advance his kingdom and his purpose.”

Thomas then used Isaiah 45:7 to prove that God has the 2016 election well in hand.

“I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things… What this passage says is that what happens on the world stage. the rise and fall of emperors and queens, and presidents, happens at the behest of God, who is always in control. If God has a plan for 200 years in the future, you can’t complain about the present. If that present is going to advance to God’s future, it must take place through this present, through what is happening right now. If you don’t like what God is doing right now, it is because he hasn’t finished yet. If God has plans for the future, no plan is too small to accomplish that future.”

Finally, while the people of his day (including God’s chosen people, the Jews) probably could not foresee that cruel despot, Cyrus, would be used of God to advance his agenda… it did not mean that God couldn’t see it. No, God was not surprised by Cyrus, God was not stupefied by the geopolitical forces at play, and likewise 2016 has not caught Him unawares.

“God is in charge. God is in control. God is sovereign. Nothing takes place without God’s will or command. There is always a purpose, even if we can’t see it or understand it.”

Be confident, Christian. God is still on his throne and no matter what happens on November 8th, His will and plans will be accomplished. 🇺🇸

I am the supreme law of the United States. Originally comprising seven articles, I delineate the national frame of government. My first three articles entrench the doctrine of the separation of powers, whereby the federal government is divided into three branches: the legislative, consisting of the bicameral Congress; the executive, consisting of the President; and the judicial, consisting of the Supreme Court and other federal courts. Articles Four, Five and Six entrench concepts of federalism, describing the rights and responsibilities of state governments and of the states in relationship to the federal government. Article Seven establishes the procedure subsequently used by the thirteen States to ratify it. I am regarded as the oldest written and codified constitution in force of the world.
