This is what happens when you publish something without vetting it. In mainstream media parlance, they call it ‘fake news.’
Except when it’s the mainstream media peddling it, it’s not ‘fake news.’ It’s just a simple mistake that can be remedied with a quick editor’s note, and all’s well.
Trending: 20 Trump Triumphs the Media Ignored!
If networks and internet publications wanted to run this story about a hijab-wearing Muslim woman being assaulted by ‘Trump supporters,’ they could have made sure to note throughout that none of it had been verified, that it was all based on one person’s story. There were no witnesses, no audio/video footage, no police report (at the time) to corroborate anything.
The mainstream media – including many popular websites like BuzzFeed – ran with the story as if it were true. Speaking of BuzzFeed, let’s see how they reported on the story, back when it first “broke” earlier this month:
A Muslim woman was verbally and physically attacked on a New York City subway Thursday night by three drunk white men who repeatedly yelled “Donald Trump” and attempted to remove her hijab, police said.
According to Yasmin Seweid, a business student at Baruch College in Manhattan, nobody else on the train came to her aid during the incident.
The 18-year-old told the New York Daily News that she had just left an event on campus Thursday night when three men approached her on an uptown 6 subway near the 23rd Street stop.
They yelled President-elect Donald Trump’s name over and over, and said to her, “Look, it’s a f***ing terrorist,” Seweid said in a Facebook post on Friday.
She said they also yelled, “Get the hell out of the country!” and, “You don’t belong here!”
Seweid was born in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, to Egyptian immigrant parents, she told the Daily News.
She said when she asked the men, who appeared to be intoxicated, to stop bothering her, they laughed and continued as other riders looked on.
Seweid moved to the end of the train, but they followed her and attempted to pull off her hijab while yelling, “Take that thing off!”
In her Facebook post, Seweid wrote about her disappointment that nobody on the train intervened when the men began to attack her.
“It breaks my heart that so many individuals chose to be bystanders while watching me get harassed verbally and physically by these disgusting pigs,” she wrote.
“Trump America is real and I witnessed it first hand last night! What a traumatizing night,” she added.
By the way, that’s from BuzzFeed News, the same people who labeled Eagle Rising and other Liberty Alliance-associated sites as ‘hyperpartisan right-wing pages’ for publishing ‘false or misleading’ headlines and articles.
I’m glad I didn’t report on this “hate crime” when it happened. This has happened many times before where ‘Trump supporters’ have apparently committed hate crimes, only for the whole thing to have been made up by the “victim.”
In the case of Yasmin Seweid, she was arrested for filing a false police report:
“…[I]nvestigators who spent significant NYPD resources trying to verify her story were unable to find any witnesses to the incident or video that could corroborate her story, sources said.
Seweid finally recanted Tuesday, admitting she misguidedly made up the tale to get attention because she was having issues with her family at home.
She was arranged in Manhattan Criminal Court Wednesday night on misdemeanor charges of filing a false report, according to the criminal complaint. She was released from court late Wednesday night, according to reports. Prosecutors declined to discuss the case or say when she would be due back in court.”
