Nigerian Boko Haram militants, partially aligned with the Islamic State, launched three major attacks in neighboring Cameroon in a span of 24 hours.
Boko Haram is one of the deadliest terrorist groups in the world, killing nearly 7,000 people in 2015. A new International Crisis Group report indicates the terrorist organization has already killed 1,500 people in Cameroon. The renewed assault surprised Cameroon authorities, who saw a precipitous drop in Boko Haram attacks in recent months.

One of the attempted attacks involved a female suicide bomber trying to breach a refugee camp, where Nigerian locals gathered to flee Boko Haram’s violence. The woman reportedly sped up as she approached the gate with an explosive vest before being shot dead by Cameroonian guards.
Boko Haram became internationally notorious after it abducted nearly 300 young girls from a Nigerian school. The group maintains tenuous connections to the Islamic State, though traces its roots to an al-Qaida aligned Nigerian Islamist militia.
The terrorist group is particularly barbaric in its use of rape. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs estimated earlier this year that over 2,000 girls have been abducted by Boko Haram and subjected to rape and sexual abuse. Many of these young girls contract sexually transmitted disease and become pregnant in captivity.
Military raids on Boko Haram often yield vast quantities of Viagra and other sex enhancing drugs used to sustain the rape of women and young girls enslaved for being non-believers, an expert has revealed.
Yusuf Mohammed, an Islamic Scholar who assists in intelligence gathering on Boko Haram, told The Daily Beast, “because they sleep with so many girls in a day, they are forced to depend on sex enhancing drugs so as to last long in the act, and a condom when they suspect a woman has sexually transmitted disease.”
Mohammed elaborated to The Daily Beast that “The aim is so that they’ll be able to impregnate as many girls as possible and bear children who will continue in the jihad.”
