Mitch McConnell SLAMS Democrats – Asks “What Universe” they’re Living In

Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is not a happy camper today. The Senate majority leader was forced to do something that he and most Republicans were loathe to do – nuke the filibuster.

As most of Constitution’s readers know, the United States is NOT a democracy, where the majority rules and the minority was go along to get along. No, the United States is a Democratic-Republic where our Constitution and the Bill of Rights work together to protect the rights of the minority and ensure that every voice is heard. Throughout most of America’s history the filibuster has stood as the minority’s check on the majority’s absolute power, at least it did until 2013 when one of (if not the) the most dastardly Senators to ever roam the halls of Congress, Harry Reid (D-NV), destroyed the filibuster on everything except for Supreme Court nominations. Reid was tired of Republicans refusing to bow to every whim of the Democrat Party and decided that instead of pursuing a more moderate path, instead of his far-left agenda, he’d simply end the minority party’s ability to slow things down. He did this by killing the filibuster.

At this point you might be wondering why Reid left the Supreme Court filibuster intact? Simple. There was no need to nuke it because there was no vacancy on the Court and he knew that he could simply nuke that filibuster when the time came. Here’s what Reid said about nuking the Supreme Court filibuster not long ago. “I have set the Senate so when I leave we’re going to be able to get judges down with a majority. If the Republicans try to filibuster another circuit court judge but especially a Supreme Court justice, i’ve told them how, and i’ve done it in changing the rules of the Senate.” Also, by leaving it intact he knew that he was creating an opportunity to attack the GOP if they ever decided to nuke it themselves. This is the current tactic being used by Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Senate Democrats who have been attacking the GOP for ending the filibuster.

All of it was just too much for Senator McConnell to take and he finally felt forced to say something. After listening to his Democrat colleagues call Judge Gorsuch “extreme” and “not in the mainstream” one too many times, McConnell stood and lambasted them for their histrionics. He ripped the Democrats for their obstruction and then hit them again for pretending that Gorsuch was anything other than a mainstream jurist.

Now they’re threatening to do something else that’s never been done in the history of the Senate: successful filibuster a Supreme Court nominee on a purely partisan basis. And for what reason? For what reason? Because he isn’t qualified? Because he isn’t fit for the job? No. Because he was nominated by a Republican President. This is the latest escalation in the left’s never ending judicial war, the most audacious yet, and it cannot and it will not stand.

There cannot be two sets of standards, one for the nominees of Democratic Presidents and another for the nominee of a Republican President.

The Democratic leader essentially claimed yesterday that Democratic Presidents nominate justices who are near the mainstream. But Republican Presidents nominate justices who are far outside the mainstream. In what universe are we talking about here? I would say to my friend from New York, few, few outside of Manhattan or San Francisco believe that Ruth Bader Ginsburg is in the mainstream but Neil Gorsuch is not. To quote a long-time Democrat and member of the left-leaning American Constitution Society, “there is simply no principled reason, none to vote no on Judge Gorsuch’s nomination.” Even less of one to block that vote from occurring at all.

To that speech, I have only one thing to say… “He’s Right You Know.”

He's right you know
