Modern liberalism is by its very nature a hypocrite’s creed, but the subject of religion is where liberal hypocrisy shines. Indeed, this month we’ve gotten a grouping of perfect examples of that hypocrisy in the way the left has treated Vice President Mike Pence and how it ignored similar expressions from Oprah Winfrey.
The left’s attacks on the vice president have risen to a fever pitch since the start of the Winter Olympics. The most disgusting attack came from the cackling hags on ABC’s “The View,” when so-called “comedienne” Joy Behar said that Pence — and by extension all Christians — suffer from a “mental illness” to believe in God.
During the February 13 broadcast of the hags’ show, Behar blurted out, “It’s one thing to talk to Jesus. It’s another thing when Jesus talks to you. That’s called mental illness, if I’m not correct, hearing voices.”
This cretin’s attack is, of course, an outright lie. Mike Pence has never once in his life said that he hears voices in his head. Pence “hears” the voice of Christ speaking to him in the same way every Christian “hears” God speaking to them. Pence hears the Lord speak to him through life experiences, through the actions of others, and in the way scripture speak to him as he goes about his daily life. He is just like any other Christian. In fact, no Christian, anywhere, says that Jesus speaks to them in his own voice inside their heads. It’s just not the way Christianity works.
For his part, the vice president slammed ABC for its attack on Christianity. During an interview with Axios, Pence said, “It’s just simply wrong for ABC to have a television program that expresses that kind of religious intolerance.” He added that the whole discussion shows how “out of touch” some in the mainstream media is.
The left has also been attacking several other well known Christians in the public eye. Recently former Indianapolis Colts coach and NBC sports analyst Tony Dungy came under attack for adding his Christian perspective to his sports commentary. And of course, we all know that the left has mercilessly attacked former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow for his Christian beliefs since the very day he came into the national spotlight.
But all three of these figures are conservatives. So, the left is disposed to destroy them at the drop of a hat.
While all liberals generally despise religion (expect for Islam, of course), the left does indulge its fair share of hypocrisy on the subject when its own icons express religious sentiment.
Oprah Winfrey is a perfect example of this tendency of the left to suddenly find faith in God to be a perfectly reasonable thing to do.
For instance, CBS news recently reported that Oprah has not yet decided to run for president in 2020 because God has not spoken to her to convince her to run. On February 15, CBS noted:
But Winfrey told Overtime that she has not heard the call to higher office: “And wouldn’t I know? Because if God actually wanted me to run, wouldn’t God kinda tell me? And I haven’t heard that,” she says.
Now if Mike Pence had said that he didn’t hear God “tell him” something and so he wasn’t going to do that something, the left would be shooting at him with both barrels.
Bu, Oprah said it. So we hear crickets on the topic.
Another case of the left’s silence occurred this month, too. After the release of Marvel’s Black Panther superhero film, one of the actresses in the flick said that the whole movie set was like an old fashioned Christian revival.
In an interview with OkayAfrica, Nigerian actress Sope Aluko waxed eloquent on what it was like to work on the box office blockbuster movie. At one point she even said that religion was openly discussed on the set:
It felt very familiar and like home. We had early call times but I didn’t even feel the long set hours because it was such a good time. I didn’t feel like I was amongst stars, everyone was so down to earth and normal. During breaks we shared our testimony of how we got to where did and most of the people were testifying to God’s miracles, it was almost like church.
Now let’s just imagine what the media would be saying if a white actress from a movie called “White Panther” had said everyone on the set was “testifying to God’s miracles.”
Liberals would be looking to destroy the movie and everyone associated with it, for sure.
But because it was liberals who were expressing their belief in talking gods and revival atmospheres, well, the left simply ignored their professions of faith.
And there you have the grand hypocrisy in the most stark terms.
