Leftwing Eco-Hypocrites Strike Again

Ahh – liberal hypocrisy.

We want green energy. We want to end the scourge of carbon pollution. We want it so bad that we’ll fly all over the world in our pollution-spewing private jets to advocate and raise awareness for solar and wind.

However, when you erect those enormous wind mills, just don’t install them in our back yards. Thus is the phony environmentalist refrain. Only this time a green-weenie, eco-celebrity (by marriage) isn’t necessarily complaining of the off-shore wind farm itself. He’s whining about how unsightly the underground cables carrying the much heralded eco-electricity are.

Singer Adele’s husband, Simon Konecki, multimillionaire founder of bottled water company Life Water, has hit out, as the Brits say, against German energy company E.ON corporation for their handling of the latest British off-shore £2 billion [$2.7 billion] wind farm installation.

Konecki, who claims to stand for everything green, is not against the Rampion offshore wind farm, but rather the cables that transfer power from the farm to land.

It seems that, after you erect these 116 hideous 700 ft high behemoths offshore, covering 60 sq miles of the English Channel, the power must be transferred back to land. What a concept. The cables are laid along the ocean floor but must resurface as they reach the coastline. To protect the massive cable network from the elements, they buried them, leaving a 14km (8.7 miles) long, 12m (40 ft) wide dirt scar across the landscape.

This “scar’ is what has upset Konecki so. The landscape scar is a blight on the otherwise pristine Sussex, England scenery. And where does Konecki and songstress wife Adele live? That’s right – Sussex, England.

It reminds me of the late Senator and leftist jerk, Ted Kennedy, of Massachusetts. The Kennedy compound is located in Hyannis, which is on Cape Cod. Its home to many a privileged white liberal. Kennedy, like Konecki, claimed to be a staunch environmentalist. But when it came to a proposal in 2005, to erect a giant wind farm off the coast of Cape Cod, Kennedy fought it all the way. Like many other phony greenies, he was all for wind mills and solar panels as long as Ted didn’t have to see them. The wind farm would ruin his ocean view.

Kennedy was disingenuous enough, but Konecki is just ridiculous. Yes the buried cables scarred his precious landscape, but the great thing about dirt is that stuff grows on it. So you have to put up with a “blighted” landscape for a while. Isn’t that a small price to pay for all that clean energy? Not to mention saving the planet.

And speaking of that clean energy – this huge boondoggle won’t produce half of what is was advertised to. It, like all green energy schemes, is a big lie. The wind turbines are touted as being able to produce 700 MW of electricity. But what happens when the wind doesn’t blow?

In it’s own fine print, E.ON admitted  that, “thanks to the intermittency of the wind, the actual output will at best average only 240MW.” That’s pitiful. Just how pitiful you ask?

The latest gas-fired power station opened by another German firm, RWE, in Pembroke, England in 2012, at only half the cost ($1.34 billion), can reliably produce nearly 10 times as much electricity, 2,000MW, all the time. Night – day – wind – no wind.

The windmill farm is estimated to make $435 million per year, until you look at the financing. Of the $435 million, almost $300 million is government subsidy. That translates to over $200 per MW hour, compared to $67 for the natural gas customers.

But thanks to the greenies in the British government, it’s too late to do anything about it. The windmills are up and cable is laid. Let’s just hope the grass back quickly. We wouldn’t want to further upset Mr. Adele.

After the grass does grow back, the residence of Sussex can once again admire their lovely views as they pay out the nose for expensive and unreliable green energy – and a lot of dead birds.
