If you want to understand why Donald Trump won in the Nevada caucuses Tuesday and is the likely GOP presidential nominee, you don’t need to look much further than the case of Eswin Mejia.
On January 30, 21-year-old Sarah Root graduated with a 4.0 GPA from Bellevue University, receiving her bachelor’s degree in criminal investigation.
On January 31 in Omaha, Nebraska, Root was fatally injured when a drunken illegal alien who didn’t even have a license rear-ended her stopped SUV while engaged in a high-speed street race.
On February 4, 19-year-old Mejia, an illegal immigrant Honduran who was facing a charge of vehicular homicide and whose blood-alcohol level had been recorded the night of the crash at 0.24 (three times the legal limit), went through a two-and-a-half-minute hearing. The judge set bond at $50,000 and required only 10 percent payment.
The defense cited Mejia’s lack of a previous traffic offense record and that he had lived in the area for three years and had family who could support him during a court-sponsored alcohol intervention program. The prosecution apparently didn’t bring up Mejia’s immigration status, and the judge apparently wasn’t allowed to ask because Douglass County, which includes Omaha, is a sanctuary county for illegal aliens.
On February 5, Mejia paid $5,000 bond and walked out of jail, only to promptly vanish.
There is now a warrant out for his arrest. He is scheduled to appear in court Friday.
Another reason Mejia wasn’t held is because the federal agency charged with protecting Americans from criminal illegal immigrants refused to put him on an immigration hold, due to the fact that he didn’t meet criteria set by Obama Administration policy that currently supplants the actual law that was passed by Congress.
Omaha police investigator Dawn Turnbull asked repeatedly for ICE to put Mejia under an immigration hold but was denied.
ICE spokesman Shawn Neudauer issued a statement to Breitbart News:
At the time of his January 2016 arrest in Omaha on local criminal charges, Eswin Mejia, 19, of Honduras, did not meet ICE’s enforcement priorities, as stated by the Nov. 20, 2014 civil enforcement memo issued by Secretary Johnson, because he had no prior significant misdemeanor or felony conviction record. As such, ICE did not lodge a detainer. Mejia is scheduled to go before an immigration judge on March 23, 2017, and it will be up to the immigration courts under the Department of Justice’s Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) to determine whether he has a legal basis to remain in the U.S.
The victim’s mother, Michelle Root, said, “My daughter’s life accounts for more than freakin’ $5,000 to bail him out.”
And therein lies the heart of Trump’s presidential campaign success. Whatever else he has promised (and he’s promised a lot), and whatever else he has claimed to support, the tent pole that holds up his entire phenomenon is the vow to close the border, deport all the illegal immigrants and make Mexico pay to build a real wall.
The Left, including pundits and presidential candidates [score]Bernie Sanders[/score] and Hillary Clinton, paints Trump — and indeed anyone who opposes illegal immigration — as a racist, but nothing could be further from the truth.
The anger coming from Trump supporters is not about race — in fact, many Latinos are flocking to Trump’s banner. It’s about an American culture that is threatened with extinction by waves of foreigners who want to bring their countries’ failed politics and cultural beliefs here, and about a party — the Democrats — that is so self-obsessed and so disdainful of the freedoms secured for us all by the Founding Fathers and generations of brave military veterans that it is willingly pushing America toward cultural suicide in exchange for votes, laws be damned.
The Left not only supports amnesty as a means to power, but it is so monomaniacally focused on itself that there are those who even propose giving the right to vote to illegal immigrants.
With a menagerie of antisocial, anti-capitalist, anti-human nonconformists at the core of its membership, the Left is always chipping at the foundations of sane, rational society and projecting its own sins on conservatives, but the push for open borders and allowing illegal aliens totally free reign is one of those issues that could actually destroy the country.
And a lot of Americans get that. Hence, Trump.
The irony — or perhaps it’s the villainy — of his campaign is that the GOP candidate who I believe is the most qualified to actually restore America to greatness, [score]Ted Cruz[/score], is being dragged down by a Trump-inspired false allegation, that he is not a citizen because he was born in Canada, a charge the Left is only too happy to bolster with frivolous lawsuits.
Be that as it may, the case of Eswin Mejia and other similar cases are emblematic of the deep, deep problems facing our country, brought on by intractable and solipsistic “leaders” who put their own drive for power over the well-being of America.
And that’s why Trump is winning.
