There is no denying that the viciousness of our current political atmosphere is something few of us have ever experienced in our lifetimes, and that we are farther from peace than we are from calamity in this country.
But, would anyone go so far as to say that we are headed into the throes of another American Civil War? According to a professor at the University of Tennessee, yes…and it has already begun!
According to University of Tennessee law professor Glenn Harlan Reynolds, civil war in America has “already begun”.
In an op-ed for USA Today entitled Is America headed toward a civil war? Sanders, Nielsen incidents show it has already begun, Reynolds argues that the actions of Hollywood and the left in general signify that such a scenario is already “well underway.”
“Hollywood has basically turned its products, and its award shows, into showcases for “the resistance.” Americans are already sorting themselves into communities that are predominantly red or blue,” writes Reynolds.
He adds that White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders being kicked out of a restaurant in Lexington, Virginia, “because the owner and employees disliked her politics,” would have been “largely unthinkable a generation ago.”
Certainly, the recent call to arms by California Rep. Maxine Waters is yet another piece to this pedantic puzzle…something that has been applauded by the left and wholly rejected as anarchy on the right.
And Reynolds isn’t the only political observer who is making such claims, either.
The professor’s sentiment is echoed elsewhere, with political scientist Thomas Schaller recently telling Bloomberg, “I think we’re at the beginning of a soft civil war. … I don’t know if the country gets out of it whole.”
In an interview with Politico, historian Michael Beschloss also said that the recent confrontations between activists and Trump administration officials is, “a new disheartening sign of a country that is becoming more divided by the hour.”
“It is almost beginning to sound like some of the things that happened before the Civil War. It’s a polarized country,” he added.
Republican Congressman Peter King also tweeted Sunday about how the country was heading towards a new civil war.
Will we allow the left to drag us downward into such hostile hate? Or is there a way in which they can be educated and rehabilitated back into American society? Are leftists such as Maxine Waters “too far gone” for our help, choosing the dissolution of the American experiment over peaceful, political coexistence?
The only path forward is a path into darkness unless the democratic party can save itself and concurrently promote realistic political discourse in our country. Without a mighty effort from the left, these progressives may wake up one day to find that they are a lost generation of vitriolic and violent castaways in a society that has moved on without them.
That is, of course, if they don’t push for war first.
