Details are still emerging regarding a horrific incident that took place in a high school on the outskirts of Spokane, Washington today.
The scene was Freeman High School, just a few miles south of Spokane proper. According to reports, an active shooter situation was reported to police mid-morning, local time. Area high schools were officially placed on lockdown around 10:40am, as the assailant was being confronted within the institution.
As of this time, police have reported that the threat has been “eliminated” but no further details have been given about the suspect.
Early estimates have relayed the unfortunate reality of multiple casualties.
“The Spokane County sheriff on Wednesday said one person was killed and numerous injured Wednesday morning at Freeman High School near Spokane, and the shooter was taken into custody, the Spokesman-Review reports.
“Initial reports conflict about the number of injured, ranging from three to six.
“Media reports from the area cite Spokane Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer as saying the person who was killed is a student.
“Authorities had responded to a shooting at the high school south of Spokane, and an official later said injuries were reported but the threat was ‘eliminated.’
“The Spokesman-Review earlier Wednesday morning reported that first responders were at Freeman High School in Rockford.”
Details will likely be slow to emerge from this specific tragedy, but the pattern of violence in our public schools has been ongoing for some time.
One point of contention within the nation has been the designation of high schools as “gun free zones”. While these restrictions are common sense for the student population, there are a growing number of experts who believe that arming school security guards and educators would act as a deterrent to those looking to perform these heinous acts.
We will certainly be privy to numerous calls for stricter gun control legislation in the wake of this tragedy, sooner rather than later thanks to the liberal propensity for exploiting these horrific ordeals with little concern for the lives of those affected.
