School Sends Home Permission Slip for Reciting the Pledge of Allegiance! Updated with Response from the Leon County School District!

In what is perhaps the latest example of the downfall of American culture and civics, one Florida public school has taken to sending a permission slip home to parents during the first week of school notifying parents that they can request for their child to not participate in the daily “Pledge of Allegiance”.

This image was shared by Micah Brienen of this past week, and it has since gone viral, reaching thousands and causing quite the stir on social media. He was understandably shocked and outraged that this was what our nation had come to saying, “My niece brought this home from school today…What is happening to our country?!?” Later he wrote, “The Pledge of Allegiance opt out waiver is part of the Leon County Student Handbook in Tallahassee, Florida. leonschools.net
This particular waiver was brought home by my niece from Killearn Lakes Elementary School. The parents are required to sign and return to confirm they received!!

This is simply the latest step in the left’s war on every cultural value of the American conservative. They’ve declared war on our churches, our families, our morality, our patriotism, our priorities, our sexuality, and now… they’re working to corrupt the minds and hearts of the most impressionable in our society, our children.

Mr. Brienen replied to the outpouring of support and agreement on his Facebook page saying:

Man I am overwhelmed by the support I have received on my post regarding The Pledge of Allegiance…thousands of shares & my inbox has been flooded with positive messages from people across the country. Never in my life have I been more encouraged to be an American citizen and Patriot. Also, sadly, it has never been more clear that some people have no idea what the progressive movement is and how it has taken over our education system.
It is so important we STAND UP for our country and what is right.

Dear readers, as tax paying citizens and (some of you) the parents of school aged children, it is incumbent on us to take back our schools and end the plague of political correctness and illogic that has befallen them. Get active in your local communities, elect strong conservative leaders to local positions, and then demand that they hire faculty and staff who reflect your community’s values and not the values of some far-off leftist in Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, or New York City. It’s time we take back our schools and secure a better future for our children.

If you’d like to contact the Leon County school district, here’s the info:

The Superintendent of Schools is Jackie Pons. Her direct phone number is 850-487-7147 and email communityinfo@leonachools.net. She is up for reelection this year against a great American and U.S. army Vet Rocky Hanna. http://www.rockyhanna.com/

Leon County Schools has replied to our article in the hopes of quelling some of the furor surrounding their decision to send home the Pledge notice. Below is their full response:

A couple of items in regards to your post about the pledge in Leon Schools:

1) This is a response to a Florida law voted on by the Florida Legislature and signed by Governor Rick Scott. Leon Schools is required to comply with the law. Florida Statute 1003.44 dictates to all school districts in Florida that, “each student shall be informed by a written notice published in the student handbook or a similar publication pursuant to s. 1006.07(2) that the student has the right not to participate in reciting the pledge.” More info on the law can be found here: http://www.leg.state.fl.us/statutes/index.cfm

2) The form that you reference was a form to be signed if a parent wanted to opt their student out of the pledge…not the other way around.

Hope this helps,

Leon Schools Communications Staff

While I understand, and I think anyone who looked at the form can see that it is an “opt-out” form, there is a problem with the first part of their explanation. The state law requires something as simple as a line notice in the student handbook, instead Leon County Schools chose to send home a separate, page-long notification about the pledge. The very fact that this is now something that Florida’s public schools are doing speaks to the disastrous turn our culture has taken regarding patriotism and our schools.
