Barack Obama recently issued another executive memo calling for more universal background checks for all firearm purchases in the United States. He believes that more background checks will help prevent the wrong people from legally purchasing guns.
However, Obama has not provided the means and manpower to carry out his call for more background checks. As it is the FBI is receiving so many background check applications that they are having difficulties processing them. Black Friday set a new single day record with 185,345 background checks received by the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System.
The glut of background applications has been so great that the FBI pulled their staff of 70 analysts that were handling appeals for denied background checks and put them to helping with the initial background applications. At the moment, the FBI has around 7,100 appeals, but those are all having to wait until the FBI is able to handle the regular background checks. Additionally, all annual leave for the 400 FBI staff handling background checks have been cancelled since the middle of last November.
Stephen Morris, Assistant Director of the FBI commented about the enormity of the number of background check requests they’ve been receiving, saying:
“The last several months, we’ve kind of found ourselves in a perfect storm.”
Like most perfect storms, there has to be a cause for the storm and the cause for this storm comes directly from the White House and Obama’s numerous efforts to push stricter gun control laws through Congress. The more Obama pushes to ban certain guns, ammunition magazines, and expanding universal background checks, the more people go out and purchase guns and ammo while they can.
Consider the fact that in 2000, there were only 8,543,037 NICS background checks. In 2008, the number of NICS background checks had only risen to 12,709,023 for an increase of only 4,165,986 over the 8 years prior to Obama taking office. In the 7 years since Obama was sworn in (and sworn at), the number of NICS background checks jumped to 23,141,970 in 2015. That’s an increase of 10,432,947, which is two and half times more than the increase seen in the previous 8 years.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see 2016 to be another record year for background checks meaning that millions more guns will be in the hands of private citizens. If Hillary Clinton gets elected in November, the number of NICS background checks will continue to skyrocket for the next four years due to her anti-gun policies that are similar to Obama’s. Don’t forget that when Hillary was Secretary of State, she signed the UN Small Arms Treaty, which could be used to ban most handguns, hunting and target rifles and shotguns.
The longer America is governed by anti-gun socialists; the more guns will be purchased by the American people making it ever harder to disarm the nation. It also means that firearms manufacturers and dealers will enjoy a booming business placing a greater burden on the FBI to conduct the ever increasing number of background checks.
