For many, one of the primary fears that they face is the possibility of a Hollywood-style infectious pandemic tearing through the human race.
Movies such as Contagion and Outbreak brought these primordial fears to life on the big screen, giving a glimpse into the sort of chaos that that could befall our plant should a global-level disease epidemic break out.
Of course, we’ve dealt with Swine Flu, Bird Flu, and assorted other “killer” flus over the course of the last few decades, all with a seemingly small impact here in the United States.
Now, however, a scary situation on in airplane that landed at JFK this morning has quite a few Americans growing concerned.
Flight 203 from Dubai was heading to New York when dozens of the 500 passengers reported feeling ill.
According to NBC, the plane was quarantined in New York after it landed at JFK this morning at 9.10am, with ten people taken to hospital.
Port Authority Police and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were waiting in a staging area to check passengers. In a statement, Emirates said just ten passengers were taken ill on the Dubai to New York flight.
According to reports, the passengers became ill with “fevers over 100 degrees and coughing” – while photos showed them getting their temperatures taken as they disembarked.
As of this writing, there has been no explanation for the outbreak of illness.
The CDC, who is on site, released an official statement in which they refuted the low estimate of only ten passengers falling ill.
In a statement to The Sun Online, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention said: “CDC is aware of an Emirates flight from Dubai that arrived this morning at JFK.
“Approximately 100 passengers, including some crew on the flight, complained of illness including cough and some with fever.
“CDC public health officers are working with port authority, EMS, and CBP officials to evaluate passengers including taking temperatures and making arrangements for transport to local hospitals for those that need care.
We will certainly be revisiting this story should it escalate from here.
