Dear Mr. Trump:
I thought you won the debate with Hillary even though you had some fumbles and stumbles you can easily correct. They were:
The “I’m smart…” on the “…paid no taxes” accusation. While it was directed at you, saying “I’m smart…” leaves you open to the obvious jabs. It would have been far better to turn the jab back on Hillary with, “Mrs. Clinton, you just do understand how business works. The IRS always gets its’ pound of flesh, but it does let us carry capital over because it gets more in the long run. Very simple. Is your vision that short?” And, if challenged:
“Suppose I carry a million Dollars of profit over as invested in materials. Taxing that million would take $350,000 where leaving it in would generate another million in gross profit. The IRS gets $350,000 your way, but by waiting a year gets $700,000 my way. This is the reason I am reticent to show you one year of tax returns as you will point to things like this which in your ignorance are ripoffs, but in the greater wisdom of business are good for America. That is why socialism always fails, Mrs. Clinton, people like you have run East Germany, North Korea, Cuba, Venezuala, Argentina and Brazil into the ground with ignorance.”
With such a response you would have turned the focus on Hillary, proved her to be ignorant, if not stupid, and run out her clock. Lester Holt would have been sputtering by then!
When she hit you with the Miss Universe issue you only had to say, “The young lady violated our contract and gained 60 pounds. She would not be considered a beauty queen anywhere, but in a ‘fat livestock’ show as a pig and she is not a pig, Mrs. Clinton. It was a term of her contract to be slim. That is a cultural standard, Mrs. Clinton. I’m sure, as a lady, you are aware of that.” To be sure the names you called the errant title holder were out of line, but by giving long answers you keep Hillary from hitting you with more such verbal bullets.
In the matter of the invasion of Iraq all you really had to say was, “In the days leading up to the Iraq war my opinion was forming. George W. Bush idea of ‘spreading democracy’ sounded good to me and all the world’s intelligence agencies thought Saddam Hussein was working on a nuclear weapon when he bought 300 tons of ‘yellow cake’ uranium ore, but I guess you didn’t know about that. Or, did you care?” Again the strategy is to smother her with words, ideas, facts and questions she cannot answer. Not only can she not deal with all that, but you are running out her clock.
You must never forget, Mr. Trump, that this election is not about you. It is about America, the laws and people running it. Keep your focus on the laws and the people and you will win.
