Is Donald Trump “Furious” about Opposition to Mitt Romney as Secretary of State?

Joseph Sohm /

I don’t know if this is speculation that merely feeds into the media’s narrative of the Trump transition team being in “chaos” and “disarray,” or if it’s true.

Over the weekend, Kellyanne Conway gave a series of interviews in which she suggested that Trump’s appointing of Mitt Romney would be seen as a “betrayal” of Trump’s supporters. Here’s one of those interviews. Her comments are heard near the end:

She did say, however, that whomever Trump chooses to be Secretary of State, even if it’s Romney, would be supported by her and Trump’s base of supporters.

Following those interviews, media outlets got reports from anonymous people within Trump’s staff who alleged that Trump was ‘furious’ with Conway. CNBC reported:

Two sources at the top of the Donald Trump transition team confirmed to MSNBC that they spoke to the president-elect today and that Donald Trump was “furious” at Kellyanne Conway’s comments Sunday suggesting Trump “betrayed” his supporters by even considering Mitt Romney for a position in his cabinet.

“Kellyanne went rogue at Donald Trump’s expense at the worst possible time,” a source familiar with Trump’s thinking told MSNBC.

Trump’s top aides said they were “baffled” by Conway’s comments and suggested that it feeds into a growing concern inside the campaign that “instead of driving Donald Trump’s message, she’s pushing her own agenda.”

“It’s dangerous,” said a top transition aide.

Now, the media is reporting that Bannon and Reince Priebus have been at odds with Conway, whom they accused of wanting to advance her own agenda. Bannon though shares Conway’s concerns over Romney.

Conway responded to these reports saying that they’re completely false and “sexist.”
