How is the Daily Mail Getting Away With Calling Justice Thomas This?

When Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas found something so important to say that he spoke from the bench for the first time in 10 years yesterday, the Daily Mail responded with the headline “It Speaks” and there was hardly a fuss raised.

It. Thomas was literally described as a thing.

Then we come to transgender model Andreja Pejic, a natural born male who had his manhood surgically removed, went through the whole hormone therapy process and now models as a “woman.”

Brietbart News’ Kipp Jones wrote a story referring to Pejic as “he” instead of “she,” a rationally and scientifically sound conclusion, and the Huffington Post devoted one-third of its regular transgender column to Jones’ “gross misgendering” of Pejic.

Even weirder, the Huffing-and-Puffington Post demanded Jones print a “correction,” which is journo-speak for “apologize, sucka!”

So far, I haven’t seen anything similar written about the Daily Mail grossly misgendering Thomas, who certainly deserves more respect than to be called an “it.”

Maybe it has something to do with the different issues Thomas and Pejic represent.

After all, Pejic only promotes mental illness, body mutilation and fashion — pretty mainstream stuff these days.

Thomas, on the other hand, asked questions during a court hearing that seemed to defend Second Amendment rights — you know, the evil part of the Constitution.

The case that loosened Thomas’ tongue involves a plaintiff who was arrested for shooting a protected species in 2009, but now faces 10 years in prison for possession of a gun because of a 2003 misdemeanor domestic violence conviction.

The law in question is called the Lautenberg Amendment, and it prohibits people convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence from owning or buying a gun.

The main plaintiff, Stephan Voisine, argues that his gun ownership rights should not have been removed in the first place.

He should be careful, though. That sort of talk could get a guy treated like an “it.”

That, after all, is what the anti-gun crowd wants, to silence and ultimately crush the opposition through insults and intimidation. In fact, that’s a symptom of the Left on issue after issue. With a notable lack of rational arguments to support the most radical of agendas, the Left’s fall-back position is to make opponents shut up and submit.

It’s straight out of that attitude that we get the “It Talks” headline regarding Thomas, which is a transparent attempt to intimidate the foes of gun control and probably conservative blacks as well.

Coming so soon after the court lost Justice Antonin Scalia, a giant of conservatism, Thomas’ breaking his long silence could be a sign that he’s ready to step up and try to fill the role of Constitution defender that was vacated suddenly by Scalia’s death.

The common perception is that now the court may have a baseline split of 5-3 on partisan issues like gun rights, immigrant rights, abortion and the homosexual/transgender agenda. It’s more important now than ever that conservatives push to follow the law even as the left-leaning members of the court look to rewrite it.
