We are just a few days away from the swearing in and inauguration of Donald Trump as the 45th President of the United States.
As much as it scares me to say it, I wonder how long he will be President? In speaking to family and friends about this subject and the escalating violence in America, I ask if there could be a potential attack on Donald Trump’s life? I was told, “Don’t go there. You’ll just give people ideas.” So, I have put my relationships with family and friends at risk because I’m raising a serious concern about President Trump’s safety and the ability of the Secret Service to protect him from attack.
As a point of reference, the last president that was shot by an assassin was Ronald Reagan on March 30, 1981. You may recall that John Hinckley, his assassin, was released from prison this past July to live with his mother in Williamsburg, Va. The motivation for the Hinckley attack then was is much different than a possible attack today.
One of my long-standing friends reminded me of the verbal attacks from the Radical Right on President Obama when he took office. My response to him is yes that was true, that many on the Right did verbally attack Obama, but things today are very different than when he first took office. First, President Obama had the national media on his side including TV, newspapers, cable, and Hollywood to fight off the verbal attacks from the right; that is a very powerful cartel. Who can forget the quote from Chris Matthews of MSNBC, live on the air when he said, “I have to tell you, you know, it’s part of reporting this case, this election, the feeling most people get when they hear Barack Obama’s speech. My, I felt this thrill going up my leg. I mean, I don’t have that too often.”
Today the TV, newspapers, cable outlets and Hollywood are attacking Trump about his fitness to govern the United States. They have challenged the Constitution to try and invalidate Trump’s election and seriously tried to overturn the results. The numbers of people in these media outlets, who have influence in America, are small, but what they say extends their opinions to tens of millions of Americans across the country. Some of the American elites and non-Americans living in the country have built up such anger and hatred for Mr. Trump that this may well reach a point where a believer or mentally incompetent person will try and do something about their hatred.
The second point is that the world today, including the United States, is more violent and less safe than it was when Obama first became President. Mr. Obama himself may in part be responsible for this expanding loathing of the United States. His border and illegal immigration policies, along with the danger of ISIS and the unrest in the Middle East, have increased the level of danger around the world. Within the United States, the incoming president could be exposed to attack from any place in the world.
The third point is that race relations have degraded throughout the two terms of the Obama presidency. CNN reported in March 2015 the results of a CNN/ORC poll that said almost 40 percent of those responding believed that race relations declined during the Obama Presidency. The Economist/YouGov poll on the same issue found that 55 percent believed race relations worsened under Obama, while just 8 percent said relations improved.
The latest example of hate for Mr. Trump was the attack on a disabled person in Chicago by four African-Americans. This despicable attack on a white person by the four blacks, two men and two women, is an example of racial tensions generated during the Obama years. During this time the assassination of police officers across the United States show a diminishment of the respect for law, the officers who are charged to enforce it, and the declining value of human life.
When I read about the most recent attack in the Fort Lauderdale airport with a gun from checked baggage, I have to wonder how effective can the Secret Service be in protecting President Trump? When Trump is inaugurated as President, the attacks from the Left will most likely increase in frequency and intensity, bringing greater challenges for the Secret Service’s role of protecting him and his family.
The level of hate currently spoken by many individuals, representing different segments of our country, is without regard to the possible outcome. Was the left wing of the Democratic Party outraged by the attack on the young white man in Chicago? Did they think the message from the assailants acceptable because the thugs were attacking Trump? Was the Democratic Party outraged enough at the slaughter of police officers across America to do anything about it? Did the Left acknowledge the massacre of these brave men and women and offer any suggestions for stopping the violence against police in cities across the United States? Has the Left said to its supporters to stop the violence and try and work things out? The answer is no, because the more controversy created, the greater the opportunity for the Left to gain the upper political hand.
Where was the Democratic Party leadership when Black Lives Matter shouted death to “Pigs?” Yes, we have freedom of speech in this country, but as has been said many times before, one does not have the right to yell fire in a crowded theater. In many cases, the Left sees the death of innocent people as unintended consequences of their protest. Thus, a physical attack on Mr. Trump would be seen as an unintended and unfortunate consequence of the Left’s intention to bring about social change in America.
I leave one final thought to my friends and family. Conduct a Google search on the number of assignation threats already reported against Donald Trump and I think it will be seen I’m not giving people any ideas. The Secret Service is faced with these threats and it is my wish and the wish of all peace-loving Americans that they are successful in meeting them.
