When Bruce Jenner first announced that he would emerging from a cosmetic surgery cocoon as Caitlyn Jenner, a vast majority of the nation was left scratching their heads.
The Olympian-turned-reality television punchline had certainly fallen from his former grace, after becoming known for his old-guy schtick on a reality program about a family whose biggest claim to fame was a sex tape between one daughter and a wannabe rapper. It was a sad and pathetic way for one of America’s greatest athletes go down in history, as nothing more than a prop for a faux porn star’s 30 minute a week basic cable cringe-fest.
Then came the news that Bruce would be transitioning into a female named Caitlyn.
Immediately, America’s minute and silent trans community began celebrating the announcement, while much of the rest of the nation proceeded to cry “publicity stunt”. Shortly after the change was made final, Caitlyn received a number of awards and accolades for her “bravery”, a commendation so absurd that it became a running joke on the satirical and sarcastic cartoon South Park. Now, after bringing dismay to the trans community through her outward suggestion of regret over the change, Caitlyn has once again irked the Americans for whom she became the de facto ambassador by making a shallow and insensitive joke about a well-known Aerosmith song.
“The reality star and former Olympian posted a photo of herself with the band’s lead singer Steven Tyler to Instagram Tuesday with the caption: ‘@iamstevent and I are working on our duet for Dude Looks Like a Lady. One of my favorite songs!’
“However, members of the trans community immediately took issue with the 67-year-old with one user commenting: ‘You really think this caption is appropriate? It’s really sad you’re a poor role model for the LGBT community. You just don’t get it.’
“Another poster wrote: ‘This song has been used as a humilation towards us for years. How could you not know this. Are you even a real transwoman or is this just a continuation of a PR stunt to make transwomen further stigmatised and ridiculed.’“‘More importantly, don’t call a trans woman a “dude”,’ another commented. ‘This is so misjudged, let’s hope this ends the careers of you both so we never need to be inflicted with either of you fools again.’
” ‘Its really sick that you are the name of the trans community. You dont (sic) even know what its like,’ added another Instagram follower.”
And just like that, Caitlyn Jenner has once again relegated herself to the realm of cultural obscurity.
The trans community in America has been thrust to the forefront, most likely against their will, by celebrity faux pas’ such as Jenner’s, and the ridiculous obsession over the fringe societal group displayed by former President Barack Obama late in his lame duck term. By combining politics with private preferences, Obama created a massive rift between the government and the people…nearly as large as the one that Jenner has used to separate herself from the trans community that she once held dear.
