On Wednesday’s episode of his new podcast, former Fox News star Bill O’Reilly explained that the situation facing our nation today was unprecedented in scope and scale. There have been past Presidents who had a contentious relationship with the media, but our nation has never known the contempt that today’s media holds towards Donald Trump.
Just last week, former Nixon speechwriter and brilliant economist Ben Stein said as much when he admitted that even President Nixon had never faced the kind of vitriol that Trump deals with on a daily basis.
I was a speech writer for President Nixon, I’ve always been a fan of President Nixon. Even Nixon was not held up to the same level of ridicule, mockery, and vicious attacks than Trump is. And I want to tell you something — I am not a big fan of Trump. I was writing in Barron’s, I suspect at least 30 years ago, that this guy possibly should be held up for criminal charges of fraud and securities fraud.
So I’m not a huge fan of his, but the level of attack on him by the media has been so vicious, I’ve never seen anything like it. And every day’s newspaper has got more stories attacking him, attacking him, attacking him. They just don’t give the guy a break.
O’Reilly seems to agree with Stein’s assessment.
“What you’ve got is most of the press wanting to get President Trump out of office and then the other side is going to support him no matter what the facts are. So neither side is really fair. So on February 13th General Michael Flynn was forced to resign as national security adviser after just 24 days on the job. You remember that. OK. And the reason was that Flynn was not honest with Vice President Pence and others in the Trump administration about his dealings with Russia before he took the national security job. While the campaign was going under way after the election before President Trump was sworn in.
“We know is it’s another leak. This one from the FBI into the press that doesn’t like Trump, OK, in order to hurt the president. That’s what we know. So now cable news goes crazy as it always does. All the anti-Trump people come on ‘Impeach impeach, impeach.’ All of this structure of justice. Ba ba boom ba ba ba. I had to turn it off because none of these people are speaking honestly.”
All right so this is an important No Spin newscast, podcast whatever you want to call it, because we’re dealing with a deteriorating situation at the White House that could go either way. So I’m going to run it through and we’ll do fair analysis, as we always do, because that is very seldom seen in America today.
What you’ve got is most of the press wanting to get President Trump out of office and then the other side is going to support him no matter what the facts are.
So Flynn was caught in a bunch of lies untruths exaggerations whatever you want to call it. He’s out. Then on February 14th Valentine’s Day is a big meeting at the White House to discuss the departure of Flynn. So you got the Attorney General Sessions is there, Vice President Pence’s there, the President’s there, James Comey the head of the FBI. So President Trump wants to see Comey alone. OK. That’s mistake number one. Very rarely do you ever want to be with anybody alone when you’re president the United States.
So apparently according to a leak from the FBI to the New York Times the conversation centers around. OK. Flynn is out. Maybe you can cut him a little slack on the criminal side or whatever. And he’s done. So we hope, this is President Trump and I’m paraphrasing from an article, we hope it goes away or we hope that there’s no more to it. So you can take that two ways you can say well he likes Flynn because he did say Flynn’s a good guy and apparently Comey said yeah he is. This is by the report.
And boy you can take it that the president is putting the arm on Comey saying look the FBI shouldn’t do this anymore. It’s impossible to know. OK. But the appearance is bad.
That’s why you always have to have somebody if you’re the President with you. So then Comey and Trump finished their conversation. Comey goes back to the FBI headquarters apparently writes a memo about what happened.
And puts the memo in his desk drawer. That’s a CYA move. Cover your butt. OK. And in the memo he says well the president did this, president said that. And that was leaked out to the New York Times. Why? Because on May 9th Comey was fired. And his friends and I’m sure some people knew about it.
But they send this memo or they read the memo. They didn’t send the physical memo, but they told the New York Times reporter Here’s what it said. And he puts in the paper and all hell breaks loose. Now interestingly enough the assistant McCabe of the FBI testified last week. There is no impediment to the investigation.
Nobody told him not to pursue the Russian connection or Flynn or whatever. That’s what McCabe says that helps President Trump because of McCabe’s number two he should have known if Trump put the arm on Comey right. You would think. We don’t know.
We don’t know what the tone of it was or anything like that. All we know is it’s another leak. This one from the FBI into the press that doesn’t like Trump, OK, in order to hurt the president. That’s what we know. So now cable news goes crazy as it always does. All the anti-Trump people come on “Impeach impeach, impeach.” All of this structure of justice. Ba ba boom ba ba ba. I had to turn it off because none of these people are speaking honestly.
They want to get Trump out of office. That’s their goal. But on the other hand it is chaotic at the White House. It’s chaotic. You have one after the other after the other after the other. So in order to survive and prosper President Trump’s got to change and he’s got to bring in a new communications team. And basically have somebody with him all the time who’s going to be very methodical about the messaging. Now I’m not saying this to bolster the White House. I’m saying it for the good of the country. I mean we can’t have every two days another so-called scandal. Now I told you yesterday I didn’t think much of this Russian thing. All right. Because the conversation was about stemming ISIS you’ve got the Russian foreign minister the Russian ambassador. Trump is trying to say look you guys got to help us. Got to tell Vlad you’ve got to knock it off over here and get a full partnership into combating ISIS. And we found out X, Y and Z.
That’s a logical thing to say. And of course, Putin is just awful. He exploits this today by saying that he’ll help the White House by handing over notes of the conversation or whatever. Hey Vlad, we don’t need your help. All right.
Whatever happened there, according to the National Security Adviser McMaster was appropriate. And I haven’t seen any evidence to the contrary. Doesn’t stop the anti-Trump people but now they have a much bigger deal. So what happens going forward? If I’m the president I understand how bad this Comey thing looks. That’s number one. It looks bad because he fires Comey on May 9th and then on February 14th he says you know we hope this Flynn thing goes away and people are linking it. I don’t know whether that’s fair. But they’re doing it.
And Trump has said you know this Russian investigation is crazy and it’s partisan and it’s hurting the White House so it’s all in that big, it’s all in that big soup can. So what I’d do is I say I want an independent commission to look into it. Right? That’s what I do if I’m president. I’d say let’s have one. I didn’t want one before. But now with this Comey business and his memo it’s a he said, she said, I said, I say in the White House. Was quite clear that President Trump was not trying interfere in the investigation. They put out a statement but it’s a he said she said. Comey is saying one thing. President Trump saying another thing. Right? So. So the FBI continues its investigation and I’m going to point to new FBI head. Senate and House they continue and we’re going to put together an independent commission. I wouldn’t call it a special prosecutor because there’s no law breaking right now on the table. I’d say an independent commission. We’ll get some good guys.
You know the people trust and honor their cabinet and they’ll oversee. They’ll do a separate deal so that we have for going. Now some of you might say oh well it’s a waste of money and waste of time.
All that’s true. But it would give President Trump some breathing room which he needs if he’s going to continue to run the government. He’s got a big trip on Friday. Does he want to be haunted by this thing?
And number two. I’d hold a press conference tomorrow. If I were Mr. Trump. I’d take questions. OK. You know I know it looks bad. Ask me what you want and I’ll answer. Not Spicer. Not Sarah Huckabee. Him. Takes some questions. Limited. I’d say you know, 20 minutes because you know you get repetition, repetition, repetition. But have a press conference. See, the American people need to see leadership here. And this is leadership. Establish a commission. Hold the press conference. That makes sense to everybody. Again, for the good of the country when taking politics out of it. Now I don’t know whether President Trump is going to do anything like that. I continue to believe that the Russian thing is toothless as far as President Trump is concerned. Would’ve come out by now if he had done anything untoward.
I believe that Flynn didn’t tell the truth. Doesn’t deserve to be there. He’s gone and maybe a couple of guys in the Trump campaign early on benefited from Russia maybe they talked to them. OK. Let’s find out. That’s what I believe. I could be wrong but looking at all the evidence that’s put forth and talking to the people involved. That’s where I am. Do I believe that the president gave the Russians anything they didn’t know on ISIS? No.
I think the Russian intelligence knows that ISIS is trying to blow up airplanes.
I think they know that so I’m not… I think that story is going to evaporate but this story the Comey versus Trump story it’s not going to evaporate. It’s going to be the. So if you’re the leader of the country you try to manage it.
And by having a press conference tomorrow by appointing an independent commission or have the Senate do it or whatever you want to do it. That’d be what I would do.
All right now, I’m going to be interested to see your comments and questions on a message board spend a lot of time tomorrow on your reaction to this big story.
I think I’ve covered it fairly. All right.
It’s a he said she said now because Trump says look that wasn’t my intention at all to stop any investigation. I was just saying I hope we can get through this. I hope we can get by this because I don’t want to see Flynn who served his country very well, you know hung. He lost his job. He’s humiliated and hope we can get by this. That’s Trump’s POV. Comey, he’s saying he felt uneasy or I didn’t see the memo. But that’s what’s implied in the article.
Now the leaks. The press would go nuts, but boy what do you do if you’re, I said yesterday you got a polygraph people. Now you can’t polygraph the FBI. Certainly polygraph anybody in the White House. He’s got leaks, leaks, leaks and that’s going to continue. That’s another reason why you always need somebody with you. Because I mean this FBI thing was just boom.
