Charles Krauthammer explains how big government fights for its own interests against democratic elections.
The most important civics lesson that Americans need to learn is how Big Government fights for what it wants against the will and lawful orders of elected leaders. This video contains some Trump criticisms that I find unconvincing, but it is extremely valuable:
Fox Insider summarized:
Opposition to President Trump from entrenched bureaucracies throughout numerous federal agencies is one of the “main conservative arguments against big government,” according to Charles Krauthammer.
Such bureaucracies, composed of civil service employees rather than government appointees that change with each new president, are alleged to be the source of critical leaks like the ones that led to the departure of former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.
Big government “develops its own interests” and big government fights for those interests.
Remember, both Virginia and Maryland went for Hillary Clinton. They did so mainly in the counties near Washington, DC, which are filled with residents who feed off taxpayers and who see their economic future depends on the expansion of federal power—in addition to enjoying exercising that power over other Americans. When Krauthammer says that Big Government fights for its own interests, he refers to the thousands of federal workers.
And they don’t just vote and lobby and sponsor politicians who cater to their interests. They also obstruct, resist, and actively sabotage and undermine any elected leader who is voted into power by Americans who live in flyover country. We saw this in the case of Michael Flynn. They can remove cabinet members and probably do worse.
Indeed, the problem isn’t just the federal workers alone. They know that they have a sympathetic press and an army of sympathetic judges. They are reminded and encouraged by the media every day to fight President Trump and defy the voters who elected him. There are also plenty of one percenters who want the President to fail in his agenda. This network of one percenters, entrenched bureaucrats, cheerleading fake journalists, rogue intelligence agents, liberal judges, as well as statist academics, has come to be called the deep state. It is a name for big government when it fights for its own interests.
This is why Donald Trump must do everything he can to keep his supporters engaged and enthusiastic. They are all he has. Contrary to what Krauthammer claims, he doesn’t really have both houses of Congress. The Republicans hold Congress and that may be better that the Democrats. But they aren’t supporting Trump like they ought to, or their voters. For example, Ann Coulter recently pointed out,
The House passed six Obamacare repeals when Obama was president and there was no chance of them being signed into law. Back then, Republicans were full of vim and vigor! But the moment Trump became president, the repeals came to a screeching halt.
The fact that big government fights against voters means there was no way there could be a “honeymoon” for the Trump Presidency, unless he betrayed the people who put him into office. We elected a fighter because we needed one to fight against the deep state.
I hope Trump realizes what he signed up for!
