As Americans continue to debate the state of our nation’s infrastructure, railway magnate Amtrak has suffered a devastating loss.
In the oft-dreary Pacific Northwest, an early morning train derailment has provided us with tragedy just a week before the Christmas holiday in America.
Dramatic images released by news agencies in the area display a horrid scene: two train cars mangled and dangling from a highway overpass as hundreds of stunned onlookers observe rescue efforts from the relative safety of their vehicles. The train’s disembarking from the tracks and onto the highway some 30 feet below not only caused chaos and casualties aboard the passenger locomotive, but also snarled traffic on a major thoroughfare in Washington State.
“‘Today’s tragic incident in Pierce County is a serious and ongoing emergency,’ Washington Gov. Jay Inslee wrote in a statement. ‘Trudi and I are holding in our hearts everyone on board, and are praying for the many injured. They are our top priority, and I know first responders are doing everything to ensure everyone has the care they need.'”
“The Washington State Department of Transportation tweeted a photo of the derailment, urging motorists to avoid the area.
The incident is certain to reignite a massive debate within the United States regarding the reality of our nation’s crumbling infrastructure system, regardless of the yet-to-be released cause of this horrific accident.
Dramatic realizations about the sorry state of America’s roads and bridges have been occurring fairly regularly in recent years. Just last year, and enormous fire engulfed a massive stretch of Atlanta, Georgia’s interstate 85, which subsequently collapsed to to the surface streets below. Now, with an Amtrak train possibly suffering from a similar, inexcusable lack of upkeep, there will be a number of irrefutably necessary questions to be answered.
