When I was growing up in the 1950s and early 1960s, Thanksgiving Day was where the vast majority of Americans gave thanks to God for all of the blessings in their lives and for the blessings that He had bestowed on our nation.
Then in the mid-1960s, a liberal US Supreme Court caved in to the demands of a small minority and ended up throwing God out of the public schools, government and many aspects of public life.
Within a few short years, the entire culture of America changed. America woke up to a nation that no longer turned to God for anything, especially His blessings. Christmas lost its importance as the Christian celebration of Christ’s physical birth and replaced it with the secular worship of money and things. Christ was replaced with a fat man in a red suit giving gifts. Christmas became the most important secular holiday for sales and gimmickry. Easter was transformed from the day the nation celebrated the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ into another secular holiday with a fictional bunny, colored eggs and tons of candy.
Thanksgiving Day was transformed from the day where America thanked God for His blessings into another secular day celebrated with gluttony, drunkenness, parades and football. Perhaps many Christians privately gave thanks to God for His blessings, but as a nation, giving thanks to God was replaced with worldly greed, and hedonism.
George Washington selected a day to give thanks to the God of the Bible for helping him and many others win our nation’s freedom from the tyranny of Great Britain. Abraham Lincoln gave thanks to the God of the Bible for the blessings God still bestowed on a troubled nation. Barack Obama gave thanks to the God of the Quran for the many thousands of Muslims now living in America. I have no idea what Donald Trump will give thanks for or to whom he’ll thank.
As I celebrate Thanksgiving Day with my family, reflecting on America today I can’t but think about Romans 1:21-25 which states:
“For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.”
“Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.” [Emphasis mine]
Think about the thousands of young Americans that have been rioting and protesting ever since Donald Trump won the presidential primary. They are indicative of a generation raised by the first generation of Americans in a nation without God. They have been so secularized that they have willfully chosen to ignore God and have ceased to give thanks to Him on this day or any other day for their many blessings, including the blessing to live in a nation where they have the freedom and right to vote and speak freely. There are still many nations, especially those who govern with the same socialist ideology as those protesting, where the people do not have the right to vote nor do they have the right speak freely or protest. This generation no longer honors God, nor do they care about the millions of men and women who sacrificed their lives and limbs for the freedoms that these young protesters are taking advantage of.
As it says in Romans above, these young protesters think of themselves as wise, but they are proving the Scripture right by becoming fools. Consequently, God has turned them over to the lusts of their hearts and dishonoring their bodies which includes having sex of any kind outside of marriage and that marriage of one man and one woman.
When Thanksgiving Day was proclaimed to be a national day of celebration, it was all about honoring and thanking God! It’s not about turkey, gluttony, drunkenness, parades or football.
Therefore, when I see how Thanksgiving Day is being celebrated by America as a nation, I can’t help but feel that America is blaspheming against God and Thanksgiving Day in their Godless hedonistic debauchery celebrations.
