The big story from Tuesday night and Wednesday was the narrative that the GOP had “silenced” Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) for speaking out against Jeff Sessions (R-AL) as our next Attorney General. In reality what happened was this: Warren violated Senate rule 19 and slandered Sessions as a racist and a bigot. For this, she was censured and silenced by the Republicans on her committee. Democrats have used the events to pretend that Warren is some kind of victim and to portray the GOP as mean-spirited bullies.
Lost in the hubbub is the fact that Warren called her fellow Senator a racist. Thankfully, Wednesday some African-American voices could be heard telling Warren that she was wrong.
Dr. Alveda King (who worked for Coretta Scott King) on Fox News:
“In that letter, she would be referring to perhaps some of [Jeff Sessions] comments, however, she would agree today that he of course ended some school segregation, he worked to prosecute members of the KKK. Aunt Coretta was a very reasonable women and she, with integrity, would have noted that he had done some great work in fighting against discrimination…she had very strong opinions and concern for all Americans and perhaps people all of the world and I believe certainly that if she could look at the record of Senator Sessions today, with integrity, she would say ‘well he has worked to prosecute the Ku Klux Klan, he has worked to desegregate public schools,’ so it’s almost like a bait and switch, stir up their emotions, use the name King, and my name is Alveda King, play the race card.”
Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) explained that he had experienced a deluge of attacks since endorsing Senator Sessions for Attorney General:

Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) also added his voice to the debate. Cruz is disgusted with the treatment that Senator Sessions has faced and wanted everyone to remember which party has historically been the party of racism.
“The charges Warren made against Sen. Sessions are demonstrably false, they are slanderous, they are ugly, and it is one of the crutches, when the left doesn’t have any arguments, they go and accuse everyone of being a racist. It is an ugly, ugly part of the modern Democratic party.
The Democrats are the party of the Ku Klux Klan. The Dixiecrats, they were Democrats who imposed segregation… and yet now the Democrats just accuse anyone they disagree with of being racist.”
