The idea of redemption is one that has been prominent in our Christian culture from its inception. As far back as the Apostles, there has been this underlying desire to be redeemed. But, the idea has always come with the notion that there is no real way to redeem oneself.
No matter how hard we work, and no matter how good we seek to live, we can never erase our guilt. This means that we need a Savior. Someone that can remove our sin from us and make us redeemed.
Now, we are being told that if you are white, the only way that you can be free of guilt is to redeem yourself.
“White Americans have created the conditions that require a phrase like ‘Black Likes Matter,’,” said the 24-year-old Seattle-based activist. “Do you know how horrific it is to grow up as a child in a world that so hates you? While you’re literally being gunned down in the street, while you’re being rounded up and mass incarcerated and forced into prison slavery.”
One might agree with Johnson. You might have felt as though you set where you do as a citizen of our country because of the pain and oppression of others. You might even feel as though you should do something.
But, what we find when we listen to Johnson and others who share her view is that there is never enough for you to do or give up. It is never enough because you are white. And this is your crime.
Johnson says that Whites have to give up themselves to atone for the perceived or real damage they have done. They must pay for being born, White.
“What it’s gonna take to dismantle white supremacy is white folks actually gotta give up something,” she said. “You have to actually sacrifice yourself. You have to be willing to give up the things that you currently benefit from.”
Now that is the least “enlightened,” most racist thing I have ever heard. She assumes that all white people live privileged lives. This is “prejudice” at its worst.
