TSA Issues Serious Warning Over Truck Ramming Attacks

Merely a day after a Jeep plowed through a crowd at an automobile auction in Massachusetts, the Transportation Safety Administration is issuing a stern warning to large-truck rental companies.

Wednesday’s incident in Massachusetts, which was quickly ruled an accident, left several people dead and a bevy of others injured, with destruction reminiscent of a series of terrorist attacks that have plagued Europe in recent months.  In what equates to some seriously eerie timing, the TSA has just released a warning to companies who rent large box trucks, moving trucks, and the like that these vehicles could be targeted for use by terrorists looking to commit heinous acts against crowds of Americans.

“Truck owners and truck rental agencies in the U.S. must be “vigilant” about the increasing frequency of ‘ramming attacks’ by terrorists using vehicles as killing machines, according to a new Transportation Security Administration report obtained exclusively by NBC News.

“The unclassified report warns owners, operators and rental agencies to protect their vehicles from theft. Entitled ‘Vehicle ramming attacks: Threat landscape, indicators and counter measures,’ the report was sent Tuesday to local law enforcement agencies and private companies working with the Department of Homeland Security.

“The report notes that in the past three years, at least 173 people have been killed and more than 700 wounded in 17 ramming attacks around the world. Of the 17 attacks, 13 resulted in fatalities. Five were carried out in France both before and after the Nice attack and four took place in Israel.

“Nine of the 17 attackers were carried out in the past 10 months. One involved an Ohio State University student who drove his car into a crowd last November, then began slashing fellow students before campus police killed him. Eleven people were wounded.”

Radical Islamic terror has certainly evolved in recent years, after the U.S. response to the attacks of September 11th decentralized many of the middle east’s more organized cabals.  Now, as ISIS,  ISIL, and what’s left of Al Qaeda jockey for position and safe havens, their attacks have become less bombastic and complicated.  The organizations are moving toward lone wolf style attacks that cause less damage than their loftier operations, but can occur with a furious frequency.

As spring slowly warms into summer in the northern hemisphere, festival season will soon be upon us.  There will be massive outdoor gatherings in far flung locales all over North America and Europe…unfortunately simple targets for the sort of attacks that the TSA is warning us about.  We must all remain vigilant and alert to the threats of Islamic terror in the coming months.
