The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) threw its support behind House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi in her race to retain her leadership post Thursday.
The group credited the California Democrat for squandering their majority — losing 63 seats to Republicans in 2010 — by promoting unpopular policies like Obamacare.
“Former Speaker Pelosi has also established herself as the world’s worst election prognosticator,” the NRCC wrote in its endorsement. “Since her relegation to the minority, Pelosi has repeatedly assured reporters, cycle after cycle, that a Democrat majority is right around the corner, only to be soundly defeated each time.”
The NRCC’s sentiments echoed House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s, who told reporters Monday he believes as long as she’s in power, Republicans will hold the majority.
Democratic leadership elections were pushed back from Thursday to Nov. 30, giving lawmakers more time to reflect on what went wrong during the election.
Democrats were projected to pick up somewhere between 15 and 20 seats, yet only manged to win back a handful of districts.
New York Democrat Rep. Tim Ryan formally announced he would run against Pelosi in race for her post. In a letter written to House Democrats, Ryan said if the party’s leadership stays in place, it will likely continue to be ineffective.
“No single person deserves more credit for House Republicans’ historic majority than Nancy Pelosi,” NRCC Communications Director Katie Martin said in a statement. “Under Nancy Pelosi’s leadership, House Democrats have become completely irrelevant, and there is no better way to ensure that remains the case than by keeping her as Minority Leader. The NRCC offers its full support to Nancy Pelosi as she attempts to fend off this challenge to her failed leadership from within the ranks of her own party.”
