It started with Rep. John Lewis ‘s (D-GA) comments to NBC’s Chuck Todd on Meet the Press. Lewis said, “I don’t see this President-elect as a legitimate president.” Trump’s “illegitimacy” had to do with his supposed ties to Russia. Lewis continued:
“I think the Russians participated in helping this man get elected. And they helped destroy the candidacy of Hillary Clinton. I don’t plan to attend the inauguration. It will be the first one that I miss since I’ve been in Congress. You cannot be at home with something that you feel is wrong.”

CNN’s Jake Tapper interviewed Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) about Trump’s response to Rep. Lewis. While the Kentucky Senator spoke highly of Rep. Lewis, he said that just because he’s a civil rights icon doesn’t mean that he should be immune from criticism.
Tapper responded that it wasn’t so much that people were saying Lewis was “immune,” but that Trump’s criticism of this civil rights icon came on Martin Luther King Day weekend, showing that the President-elect is “tone deaf.”
