In 1776, Richard Henry Lee boldly stood before the Continental Congress, summoning its members to declare national independence. Ever since, dark forces have conspired to steal the very liberties the new republic bestowed upon its people. Undisciplined and poorly equipped, American patriots faced the military strength of the greatest Army in the world and a Navy that dominated the seas.
Though they lacked money, equipment, and training, the winds of fate favored the brave colonists due to a more powerful weapon.
“That Book (The Bible), sir, is the Rock on which our Republic rests.” – Andrew Jackson, Democrat
“The Bible is the one supreme source of revelation of the meaning of life, the nature of God, and spiritual nature and needs of men. It is the only guide of life which really leads the spirit in the way of peace and salvation. America was born a Christian nation. America was born to exemplify that devotion to the elements of righteousness which are derived from the revelations of Holy Scripture.” – Woodrow Wilson, Democrat
From our founding, wars have plagued this nation. Yet, our republic’s downfall will unlikely be due to combat. Presidents throughout history have plainly described the means of our destruction. They adequately presented the rather simple undoing.
As Abraham Lincoln explained in 1838:
“Shall we expect some transatlantic military giant to step the ocean and crush us at a blow? Never!… At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer. If it ever reach us it must spring up amongst us; it cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen we must live through all time or die by suicide.”
So, if our nation dies by suicide, what method would we choose? A war between the states? As President during the Civil War, Lincoln oversaw the greatest loss of life on American soil. His own assassination resulted from the conflict. Yet, the country went on and flourished.
No, the method of national suicide must be more subtle, but certainly not unknown. Both democrats and republicans have clearly shared the secret regarding our republic’s possible destruction.
“If you take out of your statutes, your constitution, your family life all that is taken from the Sacred Book, what would there be left to bind society together?” – Benjamin Harrison, Republican
“The strength of our country is the strength of its religious convictions. The foundations of our society and our government rest so much on the teachings of the Bible that it would be difficult to support them if faith in these teachings would cease to be practically universal in our country.” – Calvin Coolidge, Republican
We face a time of great national divide: republicans vs democrats, Never-Trumpers vs Trumpers, left vs right, conservative vs progressive. We are on a path of national suicide. However, if we focus on the wisdom of our own leaders, perhaps we could avoid Lincoln’s warning of destruction.
“Hold fast to the Bible as the sheet anchor of your liberties, write its precepts in your hearts, and practice them in your lives. To the influence of this book are we indebted for all the progress made in true civilization, and to this we must look as our guide in the future. Righteousness exalteth a nation but sin is a reproach to any people.” – Ulysses S. Grant, Republican
“We cannot read the history of our rise and development as a nation without reckoning with the place the Bible has occupied in shaping the advances of the Republic. Where we have been the truest and most consistent in obeying its precepts, we have attained the greatest measure of contentment and prosperity.” – Franklin Roosevelt, Democrat
Presidents from both parties clearly understood the moral Law of God defined in the Bible stood well before our founding documents and inspired their authors. It formed the basis of our government, courts and relationships with one another. If we lose that foundation, we lose our way and our nation.
Whether a progressive or conservative, Jewish, Christian, Muslim, or an Agnostic, this moral law benefited you by giving you freedoms that no other nation has known.
Our foundation is undoubtedly under attack by the media, Hollywood and many in political power. The assault on our Biblical heritage is not to tear down a religion. Rather to tear down our country so as to empower the state.
“The fundamental basis of this nation’s laws was given to Moses on the Mount. The fundamental basis of our Bill of Rights comes from the teachings we get from Exodus and Saint Matthew, from Isaiah and Saint Paul…. If we don’t have a proper fundamental moral background, we will finally end up with a totalitarian government which does not believe in rights for anybody except the State!” – Harry Truman, Democrat
The state wraps gay marriage, transgender bathrooms, and universal healthcare in pretty little “freedom granting” packages. Satan used the same deceptive trick in the garden, convincing us that partaking of the forbidden fruit is beneficial. However, eventually eyes will be opened, revealing our true liberties have actually been stripped away.
Yet, this is not a partisan argument. Progressive icon and democrat hero President Franklin Roosevelt understood the importance of our country’s religious background.
“Those forces [Communism and Nazism] hate democracy and Christianity as two phases of the same civilization. They oppose democracy because it is Christian. They oppose Christianity because it preaches democracy.”
A social justice warrior who spearheaded the “New Deal,” FDR recognized the forces that oppose a free, democratic republic are those that deny Christianity and its values. In a 1936 radio address, he presented the method to combat this destructive action:
“No greater thing could come to our land today than a revival of the spirit of religion—a revival that would sweep through the homes of the Nation and stir the hearts of men and women of all faiths to a reassertion of their belief in God and their dedication to His will for themselves and for their world. I doubt if there is any problem—social, political or economic—that would not melt away before the fire of such a spiritual awakening.”
Even the beloved progressive acknowledged all social, political, and economic problems in a free republic stem from turning our back on God. His Letter on Religion in Democracy offers a solution:
“In teaching this democratic faith to American children, we need the sustaining, buttressing aid of those great ethical religious teachings which are the heritage of our modern civilization. For ‘not upon strength nor upon power, but upon the spirit of God’ shall our democracy be founded.”
While Congressmen bicker and fight over trivial legislation, one law sustains us. Rather than focus on politicians who don’t know the meaning of a hard days work, or rioters that simply don’t understand the word work, we should turn our attention back to the one who blessed us.
Harry Truman declared removing our religious underpinnings makes us subjects of the state. Fortunately, he also offered the simplest of solutions.
“If men and nations would but live by the precepts of the ancient prophets and the teachings of the Sermon on the Mount, problems which now seem so difficult would soon disappear.”
Regardless of who our earthly leaders are, by focusing on the one who rules over all the nations, the people of the world will say of us, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.” (Psalm 33:12)
But that’s just my 2 cents.
