“Obama Era of Weakening Our National Defenses is Over” VP-elect Mike Pence

I have friends in the military who have told me that under Obama, our military is only a fraction of what it once was. One person told me that he feared that Obama had so weakened our military that he wasn’t sure if it could defend our nation in the event of an attack and war. He went on to describe how many overseas, who once feared the US military, might now laugh and scoff at how weak we’ve become.

Since taking office nearly 8 years ago, Barack Obama has continually cut and whittled away at the size and strength of our military. He’s cut the number of missiles, ships, planes, tanks and troops.  He’s cut some of their educational benefits and training. The only thing Obama has increased for the military, other than the number of gays serving, is to extend benefits to the un-wed same-sex partners of active military personnel, but in typical discriminatory hypocrisy, benefits are not extended to the un-wed heterosexual partners of active military personnel.

When Obama took office in January 2009, the starting gross pay for a new military recruit was $1,399.50 per month or only $16,794 a year. If you’ve ever been in basic training, it’s literally a 24/7 job, but for the sake of comparison, I’ll use a typical 40-hour week. A basic trainee earned roughly $8.07 per hour. In reality, it’s more like $46.65 per day or $1.94 per hour.

Although a basic trainee is housed, fed and receives free medical, how many of their family’s back home can survive on $1,399.50 a month?

In comparison, an E-5 Sergeant with 4 years of service only made $2,3390 per month in 2009. That’s still not enough to support a family on.

In 2014, pay for basic trainees had increased to a whopping $1,531.50 per month which compared to the cost of living in 2014 was poverty level. At the same time our military personnel were receiving poverty level wages, Obama and many of his fellow liberals were pushing for an increase in the federal minimum wage from $7.50 per month to $15 per month which works out to $2,600 per month. Yet, he made no mention of raising the pay scale for our military who were sacrificing their lives and limbs for our country.

As of January 2016, pay for basic trainees had been increased to a staggering $1,566.90 per month. Seems like it’s hardly worth sacrificing your life for, doesn’t it? An E-5 sergeant with 4-years of service is now making $2,614.20 per month, barely the amount Obama wants to pay civilians just starting a job.

Obama has attacked the retirement program for the military making it less desirable for people to give the country twenty or more years of their lives. Instead of being able to retire after twenty years and draw one’s pension at the age of 38 and older, Obama is pushing to make a change that so they cannot draw their military retirement until 67 years of age. A number of people coming out of the military after 20 years have a hard time finding appropriate work and rely on that well-deserved pension to help them survive, but that doesn’t matter to Obama.

Troop and weaponry reduction was next on Obama’s list. Through his edict, former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta began reducing the number of active military personnel in all branches. Ships, planes and other equipment have also been reduced in numbers.

Obama has also been weeding out those top military leaders that refuse to say that they would shoot fellow Americans if ordered to do so. They are being turned down for promotions or being moved to other non-essential positions, both of which are career killers in the military.

With North Korea posturing for a nuclear strike, one has to be concerned over the fact that Obama has reduced the number of nuclear weapons and is pushing for further reductions.  In 2010, the US nuclear arsenal numbered nearly 2,500. Since that time, Obama has reduced it to 1,700 and has been pushing for a further reduction to take the numbers to 1,000. That’s a 60% reduction in just the few couple years.

Supposedly, due to military budget cuts and the Sequester, the Navy has delayed indefinitely the refueling and reconditioning of two air craft carriers. The last I heard, there were 5 aircraft carriers docked in the US.

Also a result of the Sequester that Obama created and signed into law was the cutting of tuition assistance to active military personnel. This has been a large draw to get young men and women to enlist, but without it, those enlistment figures are sure to drop.

According to a recent address given by Vice-President-elect Mike Pence, that’s all going to be reversed under Trump’s presidency. Speaking at the Trump International Hotel in Washington DC to a crowd of 700 people of the President’s Club, Pence told the audience:

“I was visiting Capitol Hill the other day and I told my former colleagues there to buckle up. Vacation’s over. We’re going to work.”

“Right out of the box, you are going to see our president-elect get out that pen and repeal every single unconstitutional executive order that Barack Obama signed into law.”

“The Obama era of weakening our national defenses is over.”

Pence went on to outline an agenda for the first 100 days in office, but was emphatic that America will rebuild our military to what it should be to help secure our national defense. It’s going to be expensive to undo what Obama has done, but if the United States wants to continue to exist as a free nation, we are going to have to pay the price to rebuild.

I also know that many in the military had little to no respect for Obama, but many of those same people are welcoming a Trump administration.
