I hear people saying that it’s too late for America to recover from the state it’s in, but I say it’s not too late for America or for individuals.
Allow me to introduce you to a man named Ed. When I worked with Answers in Genesis, I received a 3-page letter from a man named Ed. He said he was 92 years old and wrote to say thank you. Ed had been a staunch atheist and evolutionist and often challenged Christians about their faith and the Bible.
That summer Ed’s 8-year-old great grandson and 10-year-old great daughter had stayed with him for several weeks. They frequently talked about God, Jesus and the Bible and it only made Ed angry. Finally, Ed had enough and fired his #1 argument that no Christian had ever answered before. He asked his great grandson if God created everything only 6,000 years ago, then why aren’t dinosaurs mentioned in the Bible.
The young lad crawled onto Ed’s lap and pulled out the booklet Dinosaurs and the Bible and read it to him. The booklet points out that the term dinosaur wasn’t invented until 1841 and before that time there were referred to as dragons. The book showed how the descriptions of Behemoth and Leviathan in Job could be describing a dinosaur or dinosaur-like creature. It also talked about the many dragon legends from around the world and how most of the dinosaur remains we find today are located in sedimentary deposits laid down all over the earth by Noah’s Flood.
Ed was satisfied and in fact was angry and hustled his great grandson off to bed. The next day his great granddaughter started in about Jesus and Ed fired his #2 question asking if God only created Adam and Eve, then where did Cain get his wife? She crawled up on his lap and pulled out the AiG booklet Where Did Cain Get His Wife? and read it to him. It explains that Genesis tells us that Adam and Eve had other children and that Cain would have married his sister. Back then, there wasn’t a genetic problem with defects in the DNA so there was no problem with siblings marrying at that time.
Again, Ed got angry and ushered his great granddaughter off to bed, but the answers they both him caused him to start thinking and he picked up a Bible that was in the house and began reading Genesis all over again. A week later, Ed knelt down beside his bed, tears streaming down his cheeks, repented of his sins and asked Jesus into his heart.
Reading Ed’s letter brought tears to my eyes and still does as I realized he was the living example of Jesus’ parable of the worker hired in the 11th hour found in Matthew 20:1-16. It also hit me that I had helped with the revision of those two booklets that were used to answer Ed’s questions and therefore had a part in his salvation. It also makes me believe that it’s never too late for anyone.
As people tell me it’s too late for America, I think back to the Old Testament where God had turned the nation of Israel over to its enemies for their turning away from Him. But once a new ruler who feared and obeyed God came to power, the nation and the people repented and returned to following God and His statutes. Once they did, God restored His blessings upon them and they continued to prosper until another leader again turned away from God resulting in God pulling His blessings from them.
In 1898, the US Supreme Court ruled that America was a Christian nation. George Washington firmly believed that it was God’s providence and blessing that America won its independence from Great Britain. For nearly two centuries, America was a Christian nation.
Then in the 1960s, the Supreme Court stripped God, Jesus, prayer and the Bible from our public schools, government and most of public life. If you do a little research on violent crimes in America, you will see that shortly after those fatal Supreme Court decisions that violent and personal crimes began to increase and has pretty much considered to do so since.
If you look at America today, it is far from the America I remember in my youth. Our nation turned from God and He in turn pulled His blessings from our nation and now we have an America that is rife with spiritual and moral decay.
In spite of what so many people tell me, it’s not too late for America, just not it’s never too late for you and people like Ed. If only we would elect leaders who fear God and follow His statutes, then God might restore His blessings upon us. That is the ONLY hope America has of recovering from the despot nation we have become.
As a nation and people, America needs to heed what God told Solomon in 2 Chronicles 7:14:
“If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
As I said from the beginning, it’s not too late for you and it’s not too late for America!
