Motivation Still Unclear in Swiss Mosque Shooting

It seemed on a day that also saw terror attacks in both Germany and Turkey that the shooting at a Mosque was also terror related. The difference between this shooting and the other attacks, the victims were Muslim.

It would not be strange for the Islamist to take aim at their fellow Muslims. Islamists have no qualms with attacking Muslims that they find to be less faithful than themselves. And it is common for the different factions to fight one another.

What is uncommon is the attacking of Muslims in Europe. By and large, Muslims do not attack one another in Western cultures. It is, at least for now, counterproductive. So what do we know?

The New York Times reports

A gunman who wounded three people attending prayers after opening fire at an Islamic center in Zurich has been found dead, apparently after committing suicide, the Swiss police said on Tuesday.

Officials described the man as a 24-year-old Swiss citizen of Ghanaian descent, but they did not identify him by name. They said that he had no known links to terrorist groups, but that he was already wanted for the fatal stabbing of a friend whose body was found on Sunday at a playground in Zurich.

“We don’t believe it was a terror act,” Christiane Lentjes Meili, the chief of police for the canton of Zurich, said of the attack on Monday. “We have no evidence of a connection to terrorism.”

Three men were wounded in the attack, two of them seriously; all are in stable condition.

It may be that the man was just bent on violence. He is also the suspect in a stabbing. A former friend that he was on the outs with was found dead.

Swiss Info reports

The man’s motive and the whole background to the incident remain unclear, police added. They also said that the dead man had been linked to the killing of a 24-year-old friend, who was originally from Chile, discovered early on Sunday morning on a Zurich playground with multiple stab wounds. Police had been looking for him using DNA traces left at the scene of the crime. The police had been able to use a previous DNA sample taken during his run-in with the law as a bike thief seven years ago.

In this case, it may just have been murder in his heart that drove him to act as he did.
