The media defends half of Trump followers from being “deplorables,” but they’re missing the point.
You know, to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. Right? The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic — you name it. And unfortunately there are people like that. And he has lifted them up. He has given voice to their websites that used to only have 11,000 people — now 11 million. He tweets and retweets their offensive hateful mean-spirited rhetoric. Now, some of those folks — they are irredeemable, but thankfully they are not America.
Some in the mainstream media have responded expressing disbelief that fully half of Trump supporters are racists. Here’s a clip from MSNBC, for example:
The media seems to think that Hillary Clinton was claiming that many Americans are racist.
But it was worse than that.
Hillary didn’t single out racism or white supremacy. She reeled off a list of sins that included racism. As PoliFact reported, “Speaking at the LGBT for Hillary Gala in New York City on Sept. 9, 2016, Clinton said that Trump’s supporters were ‘racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic.’”
Hillary Clinton wasn’t just referring to neo-Nazis. She was referring to anyone who thinks that marriage is a relationship between a man and woman. She was referring to anyone who doesn’t trust the government to vet Islamic refugees and thinks politicians should care more about U.S. security than importing people from other countries. She was including anyone who thinks that public or private restrooms should be assigned for one sex exclusively and that there is no “right” to use the other one.
In other words, Hillary Clinton wasn’t saying half of Trump supporters are racists. She was saying half of Trump supporters are no better than racists. All evangelical Christians, Roman Catholics (and all devout Muslims, ironically) fit in Hillary Clinton’s basket of deplorables.
Frankly, if anything, her basket of deplorables holds more than half of Trump supporters.
