Making Tough Decisions… Wisely

In addition to their studies, my three eldest children gain valuable and marketable experience working in my business. However, as any entrepreneur will tell you, not everything can be taught in a classroom. Nor even in an office environment.

That’s why I turn to popular culture. Some of the most powerful parallels to business and leadership I’ve encountered have come from analyzing popular culture with my children. On the HBO series Game of Thrones, for example, there are sobering lessons to be learned about power, politics, managing resources, cunning, and competition. The characters are forced to make brave—sometimes deadly—choices with frequency.

My 15-year-old son and I watch the AMC series The Walking Dead, another show that spotlights different leadership styles, personality differences, and how people work under extreme pressure. As a study in leadership, The Walking Dead teaches that making the wise decision—though it may be a tough one—is possible…
