In January 2002, liberal billionaire Michael Bloomberg was sworn in as Mayor of New York City. Little did anyone know at the time what his nearly 12-year reign would bring on the citizens of the Big Apple.
Among his humanitarian accomplishments while mayor, Bloomberg insisted on regulating and even stopping the donations of surplus freshly cooked foods to homeless shelters. For over a decade, Glenn Richter and his wife, Lenore, led a team of food-delivery volunteers from Ohab Zedek, the Upper West Side Orthodox congregation. They brought freshly cooked, nutrient-rich surplus foods from synagogue events to homeless facilities in the neighborhood… The practice of donating such surplus food to homeless shelters is common among houses of worship in the city.
Under Bloomberg, these food donations became regulated by the mayoral task force, the Health Department, and the Department of Homeless Services. In order to be DHS compliant, the donated food must first be checked for serving sizes, salt content, fat and calorie content, and fiber minimums.
These donations didn’t cost the city a penny. The food was donated. It’s not dug out of garbage bins. If a restaurant was selling it, you would probably pay top dollar for it. DHS Commissioner Seth Diamond ‘insists that the institutional vendors hired by the shelters serve food that meets the rules but also tastes good; it just isn’t too salty. So, says the commissioner, the homeless really don’t need any of the synagogue’s food.’
Bloomberg also gained fame by placing dictatorial regulations on foods and drinks containing too much sugar or salt. In this venture in obsessive compulsive dictatorship that bordered on the edge of paranoia schizophrenia, he issued yet another edict that violates the rights and freedoms of the citizens and businesses of New York City. Pizza deliveries will no longer be allowed to deliver a 2 liter bottle of Coke or any other soda with their pizzas.
Worse yet, places like Chuck E. Cheese’s were no longer allowed to serve soda in a pitcher for events like kids birthday parties. The parents were forced to buy individual cups of soda for each person instead of buying by the pitcher. Ironically, you could go next door to a pizza parlor and order a pitcher of beer, but not a pitcher of soda.
In his effort to fight the growing level of drug use and addiction in his city, Bloomberg ordered a restriction on the use of painkillers in hospital emergency rooms. Imagine being the victim of a horrible accident or the victim of a crime and arriving at the hospital emergency room in severe pain and then being told you can’t have a painkiller because the mayor has restricted them.
Bloomberg bragged about the schools in his city and how they were investing so much money and time into science and technology. Yet the reality is that at the time, 80% of New York’s public school high school graduates heading to the City University of New York system could not read, write or do math sufficiently enough to meet college standards. They were having to take re-medial courses to help them learn to read, write and do math before they can take any regular college courses.
In addition to the utter failure to actually teach public school students, New York City had the lowest graduation rate for blacks and Hispanics in the nation. Barely 37% of blacks and Hispanics graduate from high school, and 13% of them still couldn’t read, write or do math.
Then Bloomberg was replaced with another Democrat, Bill de Blasio. While de Blasio wasn’t such a food Nazi like Bloomberg, he divided many in the city by promoting Muslim holidays to be celebrated in the public schools and he sided with more criminals than the police. Under de Blasio’s anti-law enforcement policies, the murder rate in New York City went up. Many of de Blasio’s policies led many to refer to him as Marxist.
Just when you think that things can’t get any worse for New York City, rumors are now circulating that Hillary Clinton might be considering to mount a challenge to de Blasio’s re-election. Just imagine, everything she promised to do to the nation, she’d do the nation’s most populous city.
If you think there are too many foreigners, legal and illegal, in New York City, just wait and see what will happen if Clinton becomes mayor.
If you think de Blasio is a Marxist, just wait and see what will happen if Clinton becomes mayor.
If you think de Blasio was anti-law enforcement, just wait for Clinton to take over.
If you thought de Blasio catered to and promote the growth of Islam in the Big Apple, just wait and see what will happen under Clinton.
If you thought Bloomberg and de Blasio were anti-gun, just wait for Hillary.
Yes, it’s possible for things to get worse in New York City.
