George Washington University students Lorenzo Vidino and Seamus Hughes compiled a report on “ISIS in America” for the University’s Program on Extremism. One example of homegrown Jihad in America is Hoda Muthana, a 20-year-old female who was born and raised in America and left her family in November 2014– to recruit for ISIS in Syria.
Instead of pursuing her undergraduate business degree at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), the former college student chose to become an official ISIS tweeter. Muthana tweets official ISIS tweets and pools ISIS Twitter followers to expand ISIS’s network.
Vidino and Hughes write that age 17, Muthana “created an alter-ego on Twitter, gaining thousands of followers and interacting with like-minded Muslims across the world.” After arriving in Syria they note, “within a month … she married an Australian foreign fighter named Suhan al Rahman.”
BuzzFeed reported that Muthana, using a now defunct Twitter handle, @ZumarulJannah, tweeted: “Soooo many Aussies and Brits here. But where are the Americans, wake up u cowards.”
For American supporters of ISIS who couldn’t travel to Syria she tweeted for them to, “Terrorize the kuffar [derogatory term for non-Muslims] at home.”
BuzzFeed excluded tweets that the Australian Herald Sun published. Muthana’s tweets encouraged American Muslims to poison their teachers and to assassinate Barack Obama. She tweeted: “You can look up Obama’s schedule on the White House website. Take down that treacherous tyrant!
On March 19, Muthana tweeted:
“Americans wake up! Men and women altogether. You have much to do while you live under our greatest enemy, enough of your sleeping! Go on drive-bys and spill all of their blood, or rent a big truck and drive all over them. Veterans, Patriot, Memorial etc Day parades..go on drive by’s + spill all of their blood or rent a big truck n drive all over them. Kill them.”
In response to the accusation that she had been brainwashed, Muthana told BuzzFeed, “Everyone’s parents or family members says that about those who have come here. To that I say, ‘Fear Allah, fear Allah with what you accuse us of.’”
It should come as no surprise that the 25-year-old Birmingham Islamic Society posted two classic taqqiya statements on its website in response: “An Open Letter Condemning ISIS Ideology” and “Our stand Against Terrorism.” The Mosque’s central location in Birmingham requires two police officers to direct congested traffic every Friday afternoon caused by the overwhelming throng of its attendees.
Nor is it surprising that the Council on Islamic Relations (CAIR), a known sponsor of terrorism, would enroll one of its attorneys to defend Muthana’s parents and pander the Islamaphobia lie. Hassan Shibly, son of Syrian immigrants, grew up in Buffalo, New York, attended college and law school there, and is now the Executive Director of CAIR-Florida.
Despite any Islamist’s claim to the contrary, Civilization Jihad requires deceitful infiltration into western communities– evident in the lives of Muthana, her college acquaintance, and Shibly.
A former classmate and acquaintance of Muthana spoke to BuzzFeed under the condition of anonymity, saying, Muthana, “was ‘very different’ on Twitter than she was in person.” Muthana’s acquaintance, also a student at UAB, wears the hijab and is an active member of the Birmingham Islamic Society and UAB’s Muslim Student Association.
After college and law school Shibly worked with various legal organizations to “help the American Muslim Community integrate and contribute to America.” In 2011, Shiply was admitted to the Florida Bar and in 2012 was able to practice in federal courts in Florida.
