Grand Jury Clears Planned Parenthood, Indicts Undercover Activists Instead?

A Harris County Texas grand jury turned the tables on murder yesterday, when it charged two staff members of the Center for Medical Progress (CMP) for the methods it used to release undercover videos exposing Planned Parenthood’s sale of fetal body parts. Remarkably, the grand jury both cleared Planned Parenthood and also, in a Kafkaesque twist, indicted CMP staff. MSNBC reports:

Indictments were issued against David Daleiden, founder of the Center for Medical Progress and self-described “citizen journalist,” for tampering with government documents, a felony, and the purchase and sale of human organs, a misdemeanor.

A tampering indictment was also issued against Sandra Merritt, who was named in a federal lawsuit filed by Planned Parenthood earlier this month.

This turn of events is hardly surprising given the current political climate, but it is still horrifying.

Daleiden faces the possibility of twenty years in prison for his attempts to uncover Planned Parenthood’s wrongdoing. Those who illegally sold body parts were not even charged.

This should likely put a damper on any other attempts to investigate Planned Parenthood’s shady dealings.

This case sheds some light on the current nature of abortion law. You might think this was a miscarriage (even an abortion) of justice, but the grand jury decision merely followed the letter of the law. Daleiden bent the letter of the law in order to protect its spirit. He posed as the spokesman for a corporation with forged papers and “attempted to buy” fetal body parts. Yet:

Planned Parenthood poses as an organization dedicated to protecting women’s rights and pretends not to sell fetal body parts. The grand jury’s turntable indictment protects the letter of the law in order to murder its spirit.

Planned Parenthood has repeatedly claimed its staff have done nothing illegal

The sobering reality is that we live in a society where it is perfectly legal to kill the unborn, chop up their bodies, send those chopped up bodies to scientists for experimentation, and receive handsome financial compensation. We also live in a society that is so deaf to the cry of innocent blood, that one must commit illegal acts in order to expose the truth of illegal selling of human body parts.

It puts in mind Orwell’s prophetic axiom: “In a time of universal deceit—telling the truth is a revolutionary act.” And lest we forget, revolutionary acts are illegal. When a nation’s entire system of law comes unhinged from any discernible moral moorings, it becomes impossible for its still moral citizens to become anything other than outlaws.
