It was reported that MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry has quit her job (some say she was fired), complaining that the network had taken her show away from her by preempting it for more popular presidential election coverage. You can read her full resignation letter here.
As her employment comes to an end at MSNBC, it’s important to remember her top 5 moments:
5. Muslim Beheading Co-Worker “Workplace Violence”
An Oklahoma man who converted to Islam – and who was fired – returned to the company he had previously worked for and killed two former co-workers, beheading one of them before he was shot by an off-duty cop. But according to Harris-Perry, the crime had nothing to do with his religion. In fact, it was just a case of “workplace violence.”
4. Kids Don’t Belong to Their Parents
“We have never invested as much in public education as we should have because we’ve always had kind of a private notion of children. Your kid is yours and totally your responsibility. We haven’t had a very collective notion of these are our children,” she says in a spot for [MSNBC’s] “Lean Forward” campaign. “So part of it is we have to break through our kind of private idea that kids belong to their parents, or kids belong to their families, and recognize that kids belong to whole communities.”
3. “Hard worker” is Racist
Harris-Perry was responding to her guest Alfonso Aguilar, who is the executive director of Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles. Aguilar said he thought that Paul Ryan would be a good pick for Speaker of the House, because he’s a “hard worker.” Harris-Perry had to stop the discussion and explain that that was racist. And then something about “relative privilege”:
2. Star Wars is Racist
According to racism scout Melissa Harris-Perry, Darth Vader is this “totally black guy” as a villain. He is essentially James Earl Jones, and he did evil things like “cut off white men’s hands.” But as soon as he reveals that he’s Luke’s father and leaves the dark side, he becomes white. The idea was that as long as he was the bad guy, he was black. As soon as he became a good guy, he also became white.
1. Tampon Earrings
A few years ago, “tea party” conservatives used tea bags symbolically to protest big government. And liberals…well, they used tampons. How fitting:
On her MSNBC show Sunday morning, Melissa Harris-Perry brought attention to Texas’ recently-passed abortion regulations—and the burnt orange-clad demonstrators who had fought their passage—in her own way: with a pair of homemade tampon earrings. “My producer Lorena made for me last week some tampon earrings,” Harris-Perry said as she put on the jewelry. “The Texas state legislature said that you couldn’t bring tampons in, when these women were going to, in fact, stand up for their own reproductive rights.”
